Buying a small SUV can be extremely tempting and there are a number out there on the market to choose from: Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Ford and Audi all have contenders. But what are mini-SUVs all about? Is there a point to them?

Most SUVs are equipped with four-wheel-drive and the natural advantage of this is that it provides the vehicle with the capability to be driven off-road. This makes SUVs the ideal choice for rural driving on badly made up roads and for negotiating ploughed fields, but, exactly how many ploughed fields one comes across in Chelsea can be disputed. Of more use is 4WD action when the weather turns and the need to traverse snowy roads becomes an issue.

SUVs have far more space than most family cars like tourers and estates from the like of Volvo and Merc, and many can seat seven people with ease whilst still having plenty of load space for the luggage. They also provide a very flexible load space and seats can be removed or folded down to create a huge load carrying capacity providing then will all the versatility of a van.

The fuel of choice for most Sports Utility Vehicles tends to be the fuel of the devil, also known as diesel. To the uninitiated, a diesel engine is beneficial in terms of torque and fuel economy, but costs more upfront and can also be hit with higher tax rates.

The small SUV might not have the power and abilities of a true Sports Utility Vehicle, but they are cheaper to run and fun to drive and many ordinary souls are finding them to be a better choice than the ordinary family car. Will you?
