The Tesla Model 3 Has Just One Display, And It's Not In Front Of The Driver
Fans of common sense should look away now. The Tesla Model 3 is going to have no displays other than a giant tablet device attached to the middle of the dashboard.
That means no speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature gauges or even a damn clock in front of the driver. Elon Musk has confirmed that all the Model 3’s readouts will be confined to the central screen, which could easily be compromised by glare in daylight.
Anyone who’s driven an old Citroen C4, or another car that relocates the crucial info away from the driver, will know what a colossal ballache this can be. It takes longer to read the necessary data, turns your eyes away from the road and just feels… wrong.
Tesla is making the move to boost the futuristic, minimalist interior feel of the new Model 3, focusing on providing a layout that works for Autopilot mode, but in the process it sacrifices the everyday practicality of having multiple dials and screens. It could even be down to cost-cutting as Tesla scrambles to make a profit.
Tweets from Elon Musk also confirm that the Model 3 won’t be getting a head-up display of any kind, either. It means drivers really will have to deal with just the one screen, which, when the sun is in the wrong place, will be completely illegible. Is it just us, or is this an astonishingly bad idea if you’re driving the car yourself?

After owning a C4 for a couple years, I can safely say, please for the love of god STOP this.
This isn’t a new concept. My Yaris has the dials in the centre and its not really a problem. It takes a bit of getting used to but its fine and its easier to park cause you have nothing blocking your view out in front.
Is no one else gonna say anything about the “no speedometer, REV COUNTER, etc” quote there? correct me if I’m wrong but there’s no need for that here right?

I’m not denying anything you just said. But going as far as inventing the smart phone… No. In fact Apple hasn’t invented anything truly original since Wosniak in the very beginning of Apple. The first official phone actually tagged as a smart phone was an Ericsson R380 phone in 2000. IPhone wasn’t until 2007. Improving and innovating is what they are good at and it has worked so far. Windows was in fact years into the smartphone market when iPhone was introduced. The useability, the technology, the capacitive touchscreen, are all ways the iPhone improved on what a smartphone already was.
The same thing goes for the iPad. Tablets have existed for decades before the iPad. Apple did what they do best. Took an existing product and improved on the technology.
Advantages: Cost cutting is easier. No two dashboards for LHD/RHD markets. Rover did the same with the SD1 in the 70ies. Being that the 3 is the mass market model, it must have a good, interesting starting price making it attractive. To get that, you have to cut down… What real details does an electrical car need? Speed and battery range. If you need to search for these details in your “cluster”, well sorry, then you shouldn’t be driving… Throw the stones! Btw., my cars have loads of dials… Water temp, oil pressure, volts, fuel, revs, speed, … I effectively use 3 (being an automatic driver): water, speed and fuel.
Sounds like a business opportunity. Make aftermarket gauges for those that don’t want to be distracted and potentially dangerous to other drivers.
