A Tesla Model S Has Managed 900km On A Single Charge

A Model S has proven electric cars can finally compete with conventionally-powered motors for range, but speed is a big factor...

It was only a few years ago that most electric cars could only manage about 80 miles of range before they needed a top up of juicy electricity. Now, a Tesla Model S has managed 560 miles (900km) on a single charge.

The hypermiling marathon took place over nearly 24 hours on closed roads in Belgium. Steven Peeters and Joeri Cools drove a P100D on a 26km loop, showing that the fastest Tesla (with a 2.5 second 0-60 time) is also the one with the most range. Unfortunately, you can’t do more than five hundred miles at speed – the test was carried out at a steady 24mph.

In a blog post, Peeters says: “Although it might be more beneficial to keep driving straight and preferable with a tail wind, our approach had the advantage that we could learn from each round.”

“By the time we finished the attempt, we knew perfectly how to take every turn and roundabout to make sure we drove with the least possible consumption. And we also got to compare each lap at different temperatures, since we’d be driving through the night and the whole following day.”

During the run, Peeters and Cools recorded the lowest ever energy consumption figure produced by a Tesla.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has since said that the P100D Model S can achieve a range of more than a thousand kilometres (621 miles) on a single charge if fitted with the right tires.

But I think you have a better feeling while hypermiling in a petrol/diesel car than in a electric one…

So 900km if you stay at 24mph, or 9km if you live a quarter mile at a time.

Yes, you can do 900km (very slowly) in an electric vehicle but my old 1.5 diesel could to 700 miles (1126km) on a tank at 100km/h (62mph) and when I run out then I stop for 5 minutes, refuel and carry on. It’s not power or range that’s a problem with electric cars, it’s charge time. Fine in the city, but no good for long journeys.
However, cynicism aside, I can’t think of a journey that’s more than 1000km where I’d need to drive non -stop. Most journeys like that would involve an overnighter somewhere, where an electric vehicle could be charged.
So maybe petrolheads can complain about something else? Maybe price…?!

1.5? my old e46 320d (2.0 liters 140hp) did 1200km easily on a full tank (60L), and trust me, i didn’t drive like a granny, i had a lot of fun with that car…. (unluckily it died at 380k km - see my profile for the full story)

And I’m here having fun and 180 miles from a full tank (65L) of fuel

why imperial for distance and metric for capacity?
why not both metric? it’s superior

180 miles from a 65l tank? That needle must be at 7k all the time.

Meanwhile my first car, a 1983 Audi 80 naturally aspirated diesel, could do 1400km on a 69L tank. And it damn well wasn’t doing 24mph.

so if they did 12mph that would mean….1800km of range….right?

Thats probbably not the case, they probbably tested it at the most efficient speed.
