"The Tesla Model S P85D is a bit slow" - said no one ever. After all, the damn thing will do 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds using ‘Insane Mode’. Regardless, Tesla boss Elon Musk announced at a press conference this evening that the range-topping Model S will now go even faster, thanks to - we kid you not - ‘Ludicrous Mode’.

However, unlike the previous over-the-air updates made available for the Model S, this is actually a physical upgrade to the fusing, allowing the car’s maximum amperage to be boosted, plus the addition of a 90kwh battery. As such, it’s not a free upgrade: it’ll cost $5000 for existing P85D owners, and be a $10,000 option for new buyers. UK prices are expected to arrive soon.

Not terribly cheap, by any means, but it could be worth it if you’re into making supercars look silly: it’ll mean your P85D can crack 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds.
