Last summer we showed you a preview of Drift Stage, the brightly-coloured arcade racer that brings us back a couple of decades. Now that the game is coming together nicely, the developers have released a free alpha demo downloadable on Windows, Mac and Linux systems. The demo is a shortened teaser of how the game will look where you can test out the single player time trial mode.

The music and artwork make the perfect combination for a late eighties/early nineties arcade game experience. You will be immediately submersed in the feeling, thinking “Oh, the memories!” The team building Drift Stage is made of only three people: Chase Pettit (programmer), Charles Blanchard (artist) and Hugh Myrone (music composer). They simply call themselves “Three dudes making a video game about cool cars and going sideways.”

The game is easy to learn, with only four basic controls: accelerate, brake, steer and boost (to come in the full version). Learning to drift the corners is simple, but mastering it takes skill. You will need to work on timing, position and angle in every turn to compete with the best times. Novice, intermediate and expert ghost cars will taunt you to improve your times even in the single player demo.

Along with the demo release, the developers started a Kickstarter campaign. In just a few days, the team has been able to raise 75 per cent of its total goal, hitting over $16,000 in the first day alone. This project is sure to hit its target soon, but you have until 8th February to pledge your support and secure your download of the full game, scheduled for release in December.

When the full game is released, it will be available through Steam. The team was very excited to have been given the green light by the Steam Community in just over two days. A game this cool with support this strong is bound to do some incredible things. Download the demo now, and let’s see those lap times and screenshots!
