There Are Now More Uber Cars Than Yellow Cabs In New York

All over the world, traditional taxi firms continue to fight against the Uber invasion, and all over the world Uber (and, it seems, the public) fight back.

The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission has said there are 14,088 registered Uber cars compared to 13,587 yellow cabs. New York’s iconic sea of yellow hasn’t quite been replaced with a flood of Prius yet, though. The BBC reports that the number of trips taken in yellow cabs far outweighs those taken in Uber cars, due to the fact Uber drivers tend to work part-time.

The executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance raised his own concerns about Uber’s unrelenting growth, saying “Uber having an unlimited number of cars means no drivers - taxi or black car and livery - will earn a decent living.”
