These Retro Rides Have Been Left To Rot Thanks To A Government Scheme
It’s no secret that we lost some incredible modern classic cars thanks to the UK government’s 2009 scrappage scheme. A full list of cars ‘killed’ by the initiative - which involved trading an older car for a £2000 discount off a new one - was published about four years ago, followed up by some sad-looking pictures from one of the storage sites used for the vehicles in Bedford.
Now, a group of urban explorers have gone to that same site to produce the video above, and the footage - we warn you - may produce actual tears. The site is now dominated by newer cars, but there is still a fairly large contingent of the scrappage cars here, and many of them are gems.
There are multiple Porsche 924 and 944s, a cluster of VW Beetles, several Peugeot 205 GTIs and a lot of Land Rover Defenders. There’s even a Pontiac Firebird, for Pete’s sake. Interestingly though, some of them have now been stripped of interior parts - this was previously thought to be impossible under the terms of the scheme.
Take a look through the video, and if you can stop sobbing for a moment, let us know which rotting modern classic upsets you the most…

I’m not sure which is worse, the government doing this or the People actually agreeing to bring their cars in like that
The U.K is f*cked
SCREW THE LAW.LET’S F&F THIS
In 2008/09 we‘ve had the same thing in Germany. People got 2.5k for a new car when they would scrap their old one. It’s unbelievable what they killed off to buy a VW Fox, Kia Picanto or Ford Ka! Why is it so hard to find a decent BMW E30 or E34 these days? Where are all the W201, W124 and W126 gone? And Omega A? People even scrapped cars, you could sell for a lot more than 2.5k!
Some people are just so ignorant and stupid… I‘d like to hit them with an iron pole. (Actually don’t to that, kids! That would end up kinda bad)

i got the Keys to a Lorry with a Car Trailer, is someone interested in a Roadtrip?
Absolutely
This is why I’ve lost faith in the UK.
And that’s what the government wants to sell us as ecological. They could have run for ages and the energy used in the production gets wasted…sad really.
Now to be honest, what kind of idiot trades a 924 or other nice old car in for scrap deals? You don’t own such cars and throw them out like a new car after two years.
well, some years back they were only worth 1500 gbp so if you can get 2000 for it…
Why is the government in any way to blame for this? Was this not a willing move from the owners to destroy their cars for some cash? It’s not the government’s fault if someone intentionally destroys a classic
