These Vintage Racing Crashes Are Absolutely Terrifying
In the days before roll hoops, seat belts and Armco barriers, motor racing was an incredibly deadly sport. These British Pathé films show the savage nature of those early years...
Back in these days men were real men and women were kind of what men are now
I nearly died of laughter.
Exactly!
Even though I agree, that is why men average lifespan was like 30 years shorter than today :P
a towering fusion of man and the machine
Those guys were insane! whoa
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Back when sex was safe and racing was dangerous.
Such shame that many good drivers got killed, but those were people who are not afraid of speeds or any injury. Fascinating how later all those tragedies got a good look on the structure of cars/formulas/etc and improved safety every year more and more.
It is a shame, but as you say sone good did come of it. If I remember right after the Le man crash in 1955 they put up the catch fences along the straight to stop it happening again
It is still deadly enough though. In the last 10 years, there were still too many fatalities in motorsport: Michael Park, Jörg Bastuck, Georg Plasa, Allan Simonsen, Denis Welch, Jules Bianchi, Henry Surtees, Dan Weldon, Sébastien Clouzeau, Ken Buchel and I’m sure many more. Here follows Georg Plasa’s horrible crash. It is quite shocking to say the least: https://youtu.be/kjotu8dObkc
I can remember Plasas 1M with that engine sound :3 Very good driver, sad that he passed away.
what fuel did the cars run on? I’ve never seen some like that before
Magnesium was a popular metal to build with
If the non-car people think today’s racing is dangerous, show them this kind of racing that happened before they were born.
Just be warned, they won’t last long while watching this because they’re prone to Color Starvation and Modern Technology Deprivation.
