This Tiny Little Electric Racer Just Did 0-62mph In A Record-Breaking 1.5sec

An ultra-lightweight, electric-powered 'Formula Student' car has broken the 0-62mph world record with a stunning 1.513 second effort

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured ‘Grimsel’, the crazy little electric car built by students at AMZ Racing. A couple of years ago the car managed to hit 62mph from rest in 1.785sec, breaking the previous record of 2.134 seconds.

The car is powered by four motors - one for each hub - producing 49bhp apiece. The torque output is more impressive though, as Grimsel has a combined 1200lb ft to play with, which is transferred to the tarmac using clever traction control and torque vectoring systems. The whole thing weighs just 168kg.

I’m assuming this is the electric car world record? Kinda hard to beat a top fuel dragster…

I recently became a member of an Austrian team ( joanneum racing Graz) and started to drive one of these little beasts. The main difference to the one featured in this post is that our car is running in the combustion class.

And the driving performance is just mental

In what way is this a record? Don´t Top Fuel Dragsters do it in like 0.8 seconds?

I was going to crack wise bout the wing, but then I saw the 0-60 time. My respect was earned.

These things are awesome! There is a similar event called Formula SAE. Basically students from universities all over the world run their own team. So this includes anything from managing the finances and sponsors to designing and building the parts.

A glorified RC car with a seat and a wing a big one at that.
