Growing up on a diet of World Rally Championship highlights and lengthy Gran Turismo 2 sessions, a life in cars was as good as inevitable for Matt.

Honda F and K series engines (DOHC). Subaru EJ lineup (Turbos). Ford Ecoboost engines. Those are my favorites at least.
1.8T 20VT from VAG?
Saturn LL0 because it’s super cheap, dependable, efficient, and not bad on power/torque for an American 1.9l I4. Mostly because it’s all I can afford though
My brother had one of these little things, the twin cam model. Bored it out, with a bigger throttle body and a full header, thing moved pretty good. Will always run as long as you keep oil in it
En08 its a 4pot 800cc engine from my Subaru m80 /Rex 3. Its realiable, very high rpm, despite of its lack of power (43hp) and torque (42nm) it can it more than 150km/h. :)
Inline 4?
I’d say for all around performance and reliability, I’ll have to go with Hondas f22b that I had in my old accord. For a sohc na 4 banger it was peppy, I favor it over the h22because the f22 had strong enough internals to slap on a turbo, where the h22 needed an overhaul for a turbo. Quite a few people also took the f22 block and slapped on an h22 head for the dohc and still have the stronger internals…Hondas are impossible to kill and the f22b is highly underrated
Isuzu 4ee1 1.7 derv 4banger. Could possibly survive being fueld by mininukes. No vtec, but sheer overengineering. They bumped it from 8 valve na 53 ish hp to 130 over 20 years on same fing internals. And it can double that one more time to 260 ish hp on s
ca18det ;)
1.9 R4 TDI 81kW. Its ok whit chip up to 120kw whit 260-300 nm
I know its not in the 1995 or newer catagory but the trd 4age is the bomb
