The cabriolet version of everyone's favourite sports car has been killed off before it ever saw the light of day

Toyota has indefinitely postponed the Toyota GT86 cabriolet, after insiders confirmed that there is no place in its plans for 2014 or 2015.

The manufacturer showed off a drop top version of its much-loved sports car at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, named the FT-86 Open. Although Toyota never claimed it was anything other than a display model, the fabric roof looked production ready in all its electrically folding glory.

No official reason has been given by the company for the current cancellation of the drop top, but the cabriolet's weight penalty over the coupe could be a factor.

Whatever the reasoning, it's nice to know that the leg work has been done already. If and when the cabriolet does get the green light, the turnaround from concept to production car could be instant. Question is, do we want a car like this?
