Legendary businessman, Twitter obsessive and occasional president Donald Trump wants to introduce big tariffs on imported cars to protect US jobs, citing national security concerns.

The Commerce Department has launched an investigation into the threat posed by imported cars, trucks and car parts, with a view to imposing tariffs that Trump hopes will help the domestic auto industry grow.

According to Politico, the likes of Toyota, Nissan and Aston Martin have “expressed alarm” at the news, while John Bozzella, CEO of Global Automakers, a trade association and lobbying group representing the interests of international auto makers in the US, called it “a bad day for American consumers”.

He said: “The U.S. auto industry is thriving and growing. Thirteen, soon to be 14 companies, produced nearly 12 million cars and trucks in America last year. To our knowledge, no one is asking for this protection. This path leads inevitably to fewer choices and higher prices for cars and trucks in America.”

The news comes as Trump heads off to attempt to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico – two of the three biggest vehicle importers to the US. NAFTA allows free trade between the three countries, but Trump thinks the US gets a bum deal.

Before heading to Long Island for crunch talks, he said: “NAFTA is very difficult. Mexico has been very difficult to deal with. Canada has been very difficult to deal with. They have been taking advantage of the United States for a long time. I am not happy with their requests. But I will tell you, in the end, we win.

“We will win, and we’ll win big.”

America had a very small handful of interesting vehicles but the vast majority of them are bland at best, if they really want buyers then they need to step up their game

I honestly doubt trump will get this through congress. It’s one of his stupidest ideas in a while. People buy cars which aren’t american because they don’t want american cars. It’s basic logic. It’s like tripling the taxes on an iPhone 8 to force everyone to get a Samsung S8, even if they don’t want to.

As a current owner of three Japanese cars, one German, and one British car, and a previous owner of many Japanese and American cars and a few European cars including an Alfa Romeo GTV6, I can say confidently that American cars are just a tick behind Japanese cars as far as reliability is concerned. British and German cars that I have owned are laughable for quality. All that great engineering, and they cannot make reliable electronics, or rubber parts for that matter. (Think harmonic balancers and bushings) I currently am taking possession of my aging father’s 1992 Chevy pickup that is on stock bushings with no ill effect. Doesn’t eat tires! It’s needed shock absorbers, belt, and battery. That’s it! Still reliable! I am an American who is no fan of American cars because they are usually boring (and as a country we tend to focus on driving in a straight line as a measure of performance), but they always work! For those that said America doesn’t make good cars, you’re wrong. They may not be desirable, but they are good in a quality sense!
