A Turbocharged GT86 Isn't Possible Without A New Platform, Toyota Says
No matter how many times high-ranking Toyota employees rule out a turbocharged version of the GT86, we’ve remained living in hope. After all, we’ve seen just how amazing the boxer-engined sports car can be with more power and a few supporting mods from the aftermarket, so how awesome would it be if we had such a thing form Toyota itself?
Now though, GT86 and GR Supra engineer Tetsuya Tada has effectively put the turbo speculation to bed for good.
Speaking to Car Advice, Tada-san assured that he certainly isn’t averse to turbochargers. “There were some articles in the media that Mr Tada doesn’t like a turbo,” he said, adding, “That’s not really true. I do like turbos, however if we come up with a turbo version of the 86 and boost up the power that would result in the necessity of changing the basic configuration completely, to come up with a car that I would be satisfied with.”
Why? It’s all about balance, Tada-san explained. The standard the car is “slightly front loaded so it makes the handling more fast and agile,” so the weight of a turbocharger plus all the ancillaries would muck that up. “That means we have to come up with a completely new platform,” he concluded.
So for now, it’s safe to say it isn’t going to happen. But hey - when the next GT86 is here, we can go back to dreaming once more.

And Lamborghini cannot make an RWD Aventador without a new platform
Even though Audi already make the same car in RWD with a different badge. cough
There’s already been use of a supercharger in some Toyota GR models…
I really don’t care if they put a turbo in it or not, and I actually hope they don’t because then you can decide if you want n/a, turbo, or a supercharger, all of which are excellent options. A turbo would take away some of the fun of modifying this car, which is what your meant to do with it, why else would they give you only 200hp to start?
Hear hear!
The 86 leaves you with many many options!
I’ve seen turbo, K24, supercharged, 2JZ, Lexus ISF V8, Ferrari 458 etc. swopped versions
In time, the 86 might just be the car people go back to for a basis to mod.
In fact, for the same reasons as yours, the gt86 should not be turbocharged
Oh, I dunno, precision engineering, reliability, normal, regular maintenance intervals you can rely on, not broken parts when your world is dearest? There are DIY people who like messing with others’engineering, and there are OEM people who enjoy a well built car out of the factory that will not knock 10 minutes into drift and chill and will start up first key every time. The one thing I don’t understand about the “built not bought”crowd is why they don’t all drive kit cars if building to your specific needs and liking is the key to happiness.
What about countries where even putting a cone in the intake is illegal, what do we get?
I mean usually people like cars that come with some sort of turbo system. I have not heard of many people that said they enjoyed installing a turbo on their car lmao.
So you can swap a Ferrari engine in it, but cant put the turbo in?
You can still turbo it, it’s still possible, but as he said it will affect the weight distribution unless the car is drastically changed. The 4586 was a heavily modified car for a different purpose, so I wouldn’t really compare it to this.
I call BS. The aftermarket is full of forced induction kits and all the owners have positive response from the kits. Toyota just doesn’t want to make it faster as that would drive prices up, lesser people would buy them and they(Subaru) don’t wanna mess with the WRX
People keep using that glitch to downvote you but I know it too. I only use it to upvote though. Whoever keeps down voting NDash, stop. He’s right. People turbocharge and even supercharge the GT86/BRZ all the time and they live the way it turns out. If the person in charge wants it the way he wants it he can get one for himself and make it the way he wants it.
Wataru’s kid must be mad now
But this doesn’t need a new platform? BS
Well that GT4586 is overkill tbh. It’s a drift car only and It’d be extremely difficult to drive. It totally overpowers the chassis.
You’re comparing a purpose built competition car with OEM offering? That is BS.
Toyota should do a rear mount turbo lmao
It’s all about balance in cars like this. Numbers are not as important as the handling and fun driving characteristics.
When you are fed bullshit with a ladel.
Although it’s slower without a turbocharger, I think this makes it more similar to the AE86. I prefer it like this.
Why make a faster Gt86 when your going to have a new Supra in the next year or so? They wouldn’t want to have anything from their own stable competing with that…..whenever that might be.
Bingo. This is, and has always been the real reason the BRZ/FRS wont get more power.
They wouldn’t really be competing with each other there would be roughly a £20,000 price difference the GT86 is closer to an MX5. The supra is supposedly going to be aiming at the same market as the Porsche cayman/ Boxster.
