Update: Did The 2015 Corvette Z06 Just Lap The Nurburgring In Under 7 Minutes?

According to Horsepower Kings the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has put in a 6:59.13 lap at the Nurburgring. If that’s true, it’s a quite astonishing time that makes it just two seconds slower than a Porsche 918 Spyder.

The car that completed the lap was a production Z06 with a Z07 aerodynamic package, though it isn’t unheard of for manufacturers to give ‘Ring-lapping cars a few extra non-production tweaks.

It’s unclear who the source of this information is, but here’s hoping the on-board footage proves a sub-seven minute lap to be true. If it is, this is a massive moment in the shifting attitudes towards American muscle cars.

Update:

As with most things that seem too good to be true, it would appear that the Z06 did not lap the ‘Ring in 6:59. Chevrolet has sent out a press release stating that the rumoured time is ‘not accurate.’ It also stated that it will not announce a lap time until it has the video to prove the time is correct. (Two previous attempts at a run were rained out.)

We were right to be a little sceptical of this story, and since Horsepower Kings has removed the video from YouTube all signs point to the story being completely made up. And now we must wait for the official time…
