‘Crozz’. Say it out loud a few times. Sounds odd, no? It’s VW’s crossover follow-up to the I.D. Buzz - hence the name - and it’s the third ‘installment’ in the company’s I.D. electric concept series.

Like other I.D. concepts, this crozzover is made from VW’s ‘Modular Electric Drive Matrix’ (MEB) platform, with a stretched wheelbase and the battery sitting neatly below the floor.

All told, the all-wheel drive Crozz is good for 225 kW (302bhp). Top speed is a modest, range-friendly 112mph, and speaking of range, it’ll manage up to 311 miles on a full charge. On the charging front, its battery can be topped up to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes, provided the charger output is powerful enough.

The interior is spruced up with futuristic touches like a gesture-controlled ‘light blind’ ceiling, and big capacitive touch ‘fields’ in the doors. There’s a fancy multi-function steering wheel too, which folds away when the Crozz is switched to its fully autonomous mode.

Any other fancy details? Well, the head-up display sounds pretty cool. It uses augmented reality, displaying things like navigation direction arrows as though they’re anything up to 15 metres ahead of the vehicle.

The point of all this? It’s all about VW’s seemingly relentless push toward electrification, with a whole new range of electric vehicles arriving from the brand from 2020 onward. Expect to see a lot more of that MEB platform in the coming years.

I think that the I.D Crozz will say this when it sees some offroad trails: “I don’t want to Crozz that!”
