Following a deluge of all-electric SUVs from major brands, VW has revealed an EV estate concept which previews a production car

While the world’s major manufacturers are finally getting in on the electric car action, there is an unfortunate SUV focus to proceedings. The first BEVs from Audi, Mercedes and Jaguar, for example, have all been big, high-riding affairs.

Wouldn’t it be better to stick these fancy electric powertrains in something lighter and lower? VW seems to think so - its incoming ID 3 bucks the ‘leccy crossover trend nicely with its smart hatchback body. That’s already more like it, but it gets better - it’ll be followed up by an estate.

Well, almost. VW seems to be claiming it’s invented an entirely new segment. The German car giant refers to the “ID Space Vizzion” concept (no, we don’t like the Z usage either) as a vehicle which “combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV,” which sounds an awful lot like… an estate car.

It will still be a trailblazer, however - as far as we can work out, it’ll be the world’s first full production EV estate. VW has already confirmed that the showroom version will be here as soon as late 2021. With a slightly less silly name, we hope.

Details surrounding the concept are thin on the ground currently - we should know more when it’s revealed in full. VW has at least said that the Space Vizzion is based on the same ‘MEB’ architecture as the ID 3, and quoted the range as 366 miles going by the WLTP cycle or 300 miles on the EPA rating.

The cabin has a “completely digitized cockpit,” plus artificial leather made from something called AppleSkin. A good chunk of the material is made using “residual matter from apple juice production”.

It needs to stay as close as possible to the concept.
This looks amazing and it is totally doable.
