It’s not about bondo, problem is in unprofessional repairs
All pros use “bondo”, but by other names. Even when replacing with new metal. It’s never meant to fill more than 1/8” at the most. It’s typically just a leveler/ surfacer. But cutting out rust is mandatory, or at least prepping the surface such that no rust at all remains. Then cover it with a quality 2K epoxy primer/sealer. Even a spec of rust will make its way back through in time.
Not always, a few of the classics I’ve done have been done purely in the metal. No filler.

Go do is only temporary. As you know it’s best to cut out and weld in new.
But we are all cheap. Not really. But can’t afford anything better
But can you make a car out of bondo?
I think they call those Corvettes. ;)
