Mostert, competing for Prodrive Racing Australia, was on his first lap in qualifying for the iconic Bathurst V8 Supercars race when he made contact with the inside wall through the twisty middle part of the circuit.

His Falcon ricocheted across the track before mounting the barrier and taking out a marshals’ post. The car then bounced back onto the track and came to a rest by ‘The Dipper’ with heavy damage, particularly to the right-hand side.

V8 Supercars confirmed that Mostert was extracted from the car by the medical crew, taken to the medical centre by ambulance and then airlifted to hospital in the nearby city of Orange. He suffered a fractured left femur and wrist.

Five marshals were also involved in the crash; four marshals picked up minor injuries, while the fifth was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
