Watch The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Lay Down A Record-Breaking 6:47 'Ring Lap

As had been anticipated, Porsche has beaten the Huracan Performante's Norschleife lap time, and is now the fastest production car at the 'Ring

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to your new Nurburgring production car lap record holder: the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The time it managed? Six minutes, 47.3 seconds - nearly five seconds faster than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.

Yes, we know the all-electric Nio EP9 went slightly faster with a 6min 45sec lap set earlier this year, but with only a handful being made to order, it’s not exactly a production car, is it?

What’s particularly impressive about the GT2’s time is it beats the 6min 48sec lap set by the Radical SR8 LM, another car with dubious ‘production car’ pretensions due to the fact it was an actual racing car with number plates. The GT2 on the other hand is a proper road car with an actual roof and an ability to navigate things like speed bumps and pot holes - it just happens to also be staggeringly fast.

Watch The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Lay Down A Record-Breaking 6:47 'Ring Lap

On 20 September Porsche sent out its factory driver Nick Tandy (who came straight to the ‘Ring from the World Endurance Championship round in Austin, Texas) and test driver Lars Kern to chase the record. The GT2 RS set a 6min 52.01sec lap on the first attempt, with Kern eventually setting 6min 47sec on a lap that began at 19:11 during “ideal outdoor conditions.” The average speed for the GT2 - running Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres at the time - was 114.4mph.

If you’re not impressed yet, make sure you watch the video at the top of this page. It’s mesmerising stuff.

Wohoo Porsche made a car which is faster than the Perfomante on slicks

Tbh whats more impressive is that it took Porsche just 2 years to make a 911 faster than their $1m hypercar

Performante wasn’t on slicks tho. You can hear the tyre sqicking at some point. Perfomante is still the fastest N/A tho

Don’t worry, I bet Lambo is already working on Huracan LP670-4 Perfomante Superlegerra to take the record back!

Only problem, it was not a street legal car so while it’s in the records, it’s in the racecar records.
The GT2 RS is a street legal production car.

The fact that road cars are achieving racecar times in LESS THAN A DECADE is fascinating…

“a handful being made to order, it’s not exactly a production car, is it?”

Actually yes, it is. Whatever is road legal and sold to customers is by definition a production car.

Exactly. Not even road legal. A car that isn’t a one off is a production car, as long as it’s not made for any race series. FXXK and Vulcan are production too

Not that it’s entirely relevant when it comes to ‘Ring laps, but Guinness would disagree - doesn’t consider the Hennessey Venom to be the world’s fastest production car because under 30 were made. I’m also unsure about the EP9 being road legal - don’t recall one ever being spotted out on the road, and I know it’s not road legal in the US.

The wording in the Porsche press release is also interesting, where they call it a “record for road-approved sports cars”

Wrong. Guiness says there needs to be at least 30 example of a vehicle for it to be considered a production car.
