Watch A Wheel Get Fired Into Red Bull’s F1 Canopy At 140mph
Red Bull tried out its F1 ‘Aeroscreen’ canopy for the first time in Russian GP FP1 and has now released video footage of the device being put through its paces
Red Bull Racing tried out its rival to the halo ‘thong’ F1 cockpit protector during first practice for the Russian Grand Prix, with its ‘Aeroscreen’ canopy hitting the track for the first time.
The team has now released some video footage of the canopy going through rigorous testing, including the device being hit by a wheel travelling at 140mph. Enjoy!
What do you make of the Red Bull canopy? Let us know below!

The wheel still hit his head, so surely the driver would still be injured?
I don’t see where the wheel hit the pilot’s head.
He did definitely get hit but he wold still be less injured than if there was no screen
Actually, was it? It looks like, but if you look at the slow-mo it doesn’t…
No it didn’t. It didn’t even touch the driver. The designers wouldn’t be that dumb.
There’s a “slight” difference between getting the wheel straight into the helmet and just getting in contact with it.

But injury and death isn’t fun
This isn’t gladiator

No.
This doesn’t even fit here
This shouldn’t even be allowed in best comments of the week any more.
I like the design. It’s much safer and more aerodynamic than just the helmet and it looks way better than the ludicrous Ferrari solution. Looking forward to see it in action.
A forumla 1 car with a (let’s be honest) windshield is not f1.
uhh…really?
Massa would need it back then..
Do i think we should have these mandatory? No, should drivers have the choice ofcourse
Redbull didn’t use it at the qualifying today, so why did they release a videp about it if they won’t even use it?
because, in the FIA Formula 1 rulebook, it stipulates what can and cannot be used, an exemption was made for practice one as the device is still under testing and would need to be homologated by FIA before it is able to be used without applying for an exemption in the rule book, and the exemption is so tight that Red Bull is only allowed one lap

But will it allow a quick escape in case of a burning vehicle?
Of course, the top is still just as open as it is without it
