That looks to me to be a bimetallic switch. Most indicators nowadays will use relays or a full on microcontroller to run the turn signals. The bimetallic switches are a common, cheap and also fairly old fashioned way of controlling the turn signals. Relays are generally more common and are a fair bit more resistant to temperature changes and therefore are more robust.
