Since we now have a Driving Music community, I want to get your take on an age-old question: what’s the best driving song ever written?

Growing up on a diet of World Rally Championship highlights and lengthy Gran Turismo 2 sessions, a life in cars was as good as inevitable for Matt.

To clarify. This is not about “quintesential” b0llocks. Anyone who just rattles off the “Top Gear Driving Anthems 2005” set list is ill informed. I believe for a good fast b road there are some bands that cannot be ignored. QOTSA, Pendulum, Prodigy if you’re feeling very life threatening, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver etc. For a motorway evening jaunt some nice repetitive house/melodic whatever you want to call it works well. Nothing like synching a Deadmau5 beat with the lines disappearing beneath your car, and the miles just seem to whittle away. Arty is good for this also.

As for specific songs?
Queens Of The Stoneage- Sick Sick Sick, Go with the flow etc. Too many to name.
Pendulum- Hold your Colour, Streamline, Midnight runner etc. Too many to name. Prodigy- Climbatize.
Audioslave- Show Me How to Live.
Velvet revolver- she builds quick machines
Deadmau5- Arguru
Arty- Hey Now

The problem is that there is no such thing as ‘the best ever driving song’. Because the weather, the place where you’re driving, the road, the situation in which you’re driving, the time of day, etc… all play a part in it. Say you’re driving in the south of France to your holiday destination, it’s hot outside, the sun is shining, you’re on the motorway. Tombstone Blues by Bob Dylan would be a great song for that moment. but you’re driving home from work, it’s dark, it’s raining, it’s cold, then The Globalist by Muse would be a nice song to listen to.

See, it’s the reason why you’re driving, the surroundings and your own feelings that decide which song feels great. There is no universally perfect driving song.
