Who Needs The Autobahn When There Are Miles Of Derestricted Australian Outback

In an initiative to bring "responsibility back to motorists," Australia's Northern Territory transport minister Peter Styles has announced that 120 miles of the Stuart Highway will feature no speed limits from February 2014.

The Stuart Highway's 130kph (81mph) limit will be lifted between Alice Springs and Barrow Creek for the 12-month trial thanks to the stretch's zero speed-related deaths record between 2001 and 2011.

Of course, the initiative isn't welcomed by all. Australian Automobile Association boss Andrew McKellar said: "It's gambling with people's lives... it is absolutely inevitable that people will die as a result."

While it's hard to disagree with McKellar, we'll have to wait and see what comes of the move. One thing's for sure, though: the next time you go to Oz, make sure you hire the fastest car you can afford and head north.
