So it is nearing the end of 2016, and it looks like the manual has reached a trend, many more manufacturers are pulling the plug on the beloved 3 pedal stick for the more “friendly” choice of automatic, in other words, the choice for your average grocery getter, visits to the tanning salons and the choice for rolling up to your local vegan joint. But that’s not what this article is about, it is here to celebrate the 3 pedal stick, the holy grail of the petrol head, The manual transmission

Okay, so for us petrol heads, the only thing more satisfying than a nice, clean, upshift is a nice clean downshift whether it is just a rev match or a heel toe, there is just a satisfaction when you go into the next gear whether it is higher or lower and have it go in like a hot knife through butter, but it is quite satisfying, literally the equivalent of every satisfying thing put together into one.

With more and more manufacturers pulling the plug on the beloved manual and going with the auto, or the performance equivalent, the dual clutch. The manual is still there raising it’s flag like the true champ that it is, many performance cars only come in with the manual option, including the Doge Viper

Driving a manual provides a satisfaction like no other, especially when all the techniques are done right and in a fashionable manner. Simply rowing through the gears like a dummy chump won’t do you any good unless you have some finesse and not be like this guy

And not to mention, it is the safest way to make sure that your car won’t get stolen, if you live in the states, where only the highest class of car thieves know how to drive it, and not to mention, if you get car jacked, there’s a high chance they’ll stall the car, giving you a chance to save your pride and joy from being driven like a race car by someone other than you.

Not to mention that you won’t have a bae, but that’s okay because you’ll be too busy rowing through the gears to remember anyone anyways.

I think every car guy should know how to drive a manual, but you don’t have to drive one.

There’s two sides to every story. Yes a manual car is fun to drive and has its perks but why are higher end cars such as your Ferrari’s, your Lamorghini’s, Porsches, etc. moving away from manuals? Simply put it as “evolution”. The manual lived its time and there is no feeling that can replace using all four of your limbs to connect with the car. But now automated manuals have taken over. Wither its a SMG, e-gear, DCT, PDK, or DSG. It’s quicker and more efficient. Take for example, a 335is which comes with a 7 speed DCT found on the E92 M3. A true enthusiast would drive it manually and click through the gears either through the paddles or lever like its meant to. You get millisecond shifts, perfectly executed rev-match downshifts, and a 0 to 60 of 4.7 secs vs. 5.1 secs on the 6spd manual. Then you ask well not everyone is driving to race or tracks there car. Well for the people that do getting a 2 sec lap faster each time over the manual counterpart adds up. Until you actually drive a car that has a sequential manual gear box or a DCT you won’t realize why it is the better choice. Now I am completely against your torque converter slush box autos or CVTs. Most people do not realize that SMG’s and DCT’s are manuals that are automated with clutches rather than a torque converter. Big difference there.

Alright you might love autos. But to me it’s boring af to just accelerate-brake-accelerate-brake-accelerate-brake. Personally it’s not fun. A perfect downshift is fun. When I make that Jeremy Clarkson’s face, that is fun. Yes performace cars might be better off with a auto/dual clutch but I am gonna take stuff in my budget which is an everyday car and I prefer Manual in that. At least I have gear switching to do in traffic which keeps me busy.

For track and clear roads a stick shift feels so good, but mostly traffic and everyday driving automatic is the way to go, currently dirivng my dads Hyundai I20 with auto transmision, at least is a nice detail to have sport mode to change gears as I want, good thing I learned with a stick shift Chevy Optra
