Why the BMW ///M5 Is My All Time Favourite Car.

Well, I’ll come back to that last point a little later on.
So why is my favourite car of all time a four-door saloon car that looks like a taxi, and has a big boot? Especially when both Audi and Mercedes offer brilliant equivalents.
I’ve liked cars for a very long time. That sounds really annoying and stupid coming from an 18 year old, I know. The reason I say for a very long time is because this is the first car I remember making me want to learn about what cars really are.
I know that the majority of people just see cars as big metal boxes on 4 wheels. They primarily use them to go from one destination to another. They often put some of their things in them which they move from one place to another. They also use them to move other people around too. They like to sometimes put their things in another smaller box that is on sometimes more or even less wheels to move and carry things around behind. It’s a very good idea. Very useful.
I’m not saying that these are bad things, they are in fact very good. It’s what cars are for, transportation.
M535i
In 1980 BMW launched this, the BMW M535i. This is where it all began. This was the 3rd car to come from ///M, BMW’s Motorsport division/department, whatever you like to call it, it doesn’t matter. Before the M535i they put out the 3.0 CLS, but more importantly, the M1.
M1
That car there, that’s the M1. There aren’t many left today, although, there were not many in the first place. Only 453 M1’s were ever made. You see, the 3.0 CSL and this car, the M1. These were not ‘mass produced’ if that’s an appropriate term. I don’t know. I’m just writing what’s coming from inside. But you see, these two cars were limited-production cars, they were sports cars built with a purpose. The M535i however, that’s a different story…
You see, it was just an oh so slightly doctored 5 series with an oh so slightly different engine from the M1. It had the BMW M90 as opposed to the M88/1. It was a family saloon car with essentially the same engine you’d find in a full-on sports car. It brought a lot of the power and dynamics to the comfort of getting from one place to another in an ordinary fashion. It didn’t matter whether you had 3 people with 3 big bags of luggage on their way to a meeting in a hurry, or if you were taking some friends and family out for the day. It brought the feel and drive of a sports car to the familiarity of the ideal world.
E28 M5
Four years later the E28 M5 made its first ever appearance at the Amsterdam Motor Show. It was born out of question and desire for what the M535i bought to BMW and the rest of the motoring world. It was a sharper, more powerful M535i. It had a newer version of the M535i’s body-kit, despite still having the 535’s chassis.
Production began in Europe in 1985 and made it’s way to North America the following year. A total of 2,191 M5’s were made.
The M5 had a 3.5 litre straight six producing 286 horsepower, which in 1985 must of been absolutely crazy. I remember watching Chris Harris on YouTube talking about his ‘86 M5. Just reading how it had 286 horsepower and re-reading everything because he didn’t believe it, all of which I can believe and understand.
After the E28 M5 we saw the E34 and then in 1998 came the E39.
The E39 M5 was the first M5 to come with eight cylinders. Two more than the previous M5. It was a major step up in the automotive world. A comfortable four-door family saloon car with 400 horsepower. Crazy is the word.
When the E39 was produced back in 1998, it was the first to come with a V8. It had a 4.9 litre naturally aspirated engine with 400 horsepower. After this made it’s appearance things really started to change. It was a real contender, not only for Mercedes, but more track oriented sports cars. It was then that things really started to take shape. Chris had one of those too.
In 2005 however, this is where I think BMW were at their best.
This is the BMW E60 M5.
This, like all previous M5’s is a car that will take 4 people and their luggage, in comfort, to their destination whether it be 2 or 2000 miles away. Like all previous M5’s it can handle itself on fast, twisting roads, or even the nearest racing track. And like all previous M5’s, it’s as unsuspecting as a London taxi.
Unlike the old M5 however, it has a 5.0 litre naturally aspirated 507 horsepower V10. Unlike the old M5 it has a semi-automatic flappy-paddle gear box & electronic differential.
And unlike the old M5…….it will crack 200 miles per hour. That, in a family saloon car, is f*cking absurd!
So, a quick summary of why the M5, more specifically the E60 M5 is my all time favourite car…
It is part of a legacy of an extraordinary example of what happens when you take a simple idea and take it to and beyond it’s expectations. It is a car that can be used as a family saloon, but at the push of a button, can dominate a race track and then drive away peacefully with all it’s pride and glory. It’s a car that brought us up to date with technology and has used it to emphasize what it can do, not to, but with, a car like this. The M5 has always been, a fantastic, car.

…………….but what about the F10???
Can I even think of something to write???
Should I even need to try? What with all it’s power and user friendliness???
It’s an M5, right???
Well, in my opinion……….not really.
Remember the blog post I made about the Veyron?
Yeah, that one.
And remember how I talked about the One:1? The fact that is was faster..and more powerful? And I finished by pointing out how although is was great in every, I guess ‘measurable way’. I know I didn’t say that at the time, but the point still stands.
I just feel like the new F10 M5 has been made to sell. Not to enthusiasts, just to anyone who wants a fast family car. I get that, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
But the new M5 is turbo charged, and has a smaller engine. The big gain with the M5 was that is was always improving and made no sacrifices. It was still modest and still had character. It looked like an M5, it sounded like one, and was one.
The F10 just doesn’t give off the same emotions. I mean look at it…
Of course it’s understated, it’s an M5. I just think that it’s so clinical. It lacks character. I’ve always found the noise a car makes tells you who the car really is and what it’s about. But I just think that this, the F10 M5 is, well….sh*t.
It may be a good car, but to me at least, it’s not an M5.

You’re young, you’ll learn. Progress is change, but change doesn’t always seem like progress. The glorious V10 got 200 miles to a tank of gas, plus was a byproduct of BMW’s defunct f1 program, same as the single generation M3 V8. The new M3 & M5 reflect the realities of their time. Of course the F10 doesn’t appeal to you the way the cars you grew up with did. The fact that it is platform engineered from a 7 means it will be bigger than in the past, you may have to change allegiance to the M3, just as the M2 has been well received who find the 3 too large.
E39 is my favorite. The first BMW that my family owned. The M5 version just look bad ass. Up to this day, its still my dream car.
The M535i in the picture is actually an e28 not an e12 ;)
Hi mate thought id comment to sy what a great post you have done. It was a interesting read. Ive owned a e39 m5 and must say i loved everything about. The sound was to die for. Ive got to agree with you tho my peronal fave is the e60 m5. My brother owns one and it a incredible car. Its like a supercar with a four door body. The v10 soundtrack is simply orgasmic.
The new m5 has lost its character, its quiet and bit barge like, its fast in a straight line but thats about it or me. I dont like these economical and government friendly bi turbo engines they are producing. Thats my opinion tho.
Great post ☺
You’re more than welcome man! Thanks for your comment too :) I’ve seen quiet a few E39’s and E60. Although I love and still favour the V10, that V8 is so f*cking badass. Also, if you really are interested in ma stuff you can head over to http://www.revvingitdaily.com/ where I am now also writing and will be writing new stuff a few times every week :D Only if you’re interested my though, I don’t wanna push people.
Great great post my friend. I agree with your write up completley.
The E39 M5 (my bro owned) is the iconic M5. Although a little dated it will be forever a classic.
The E60 M5 (I own) won best Engine of the year beating the F430. It was the first engine M division took and designed from new, specifically for an M Car. Unlike the 540i engine enhanced for the e39.
Also the single clutch 7 speed semi-auto trans was a first in the M5.
Yes a bit of a dinasaur compared to today’s duel clutch standards but you can’t beat the break ya neck gear change!!
I love my E60, I hope it will follow the e39 M5 classic status in years to come.
The F10, I know a few ppl who own this car.
Yes it is super super quick in a straight line. Stock it WON’T break 200mph. It weighs more than the E60 and handles like a turd for its new M5 status.
Also the soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired.
Probably sounds biased to a lot of M fans but I feel e39 and e60 m5 are top of the pile.
F10 has broken the M -car naturally aspirated rule.
Following in Audi and Mercedes footsteps.
Absolutely fantastic article to read. All good points about those cars and 100% agree with you.
In my opinion, BMW have lost the plot a bit. M cars need to stay M cars. I appreciate what they are doing to prove in terms of emissions, plus delivering ridiculous amount of power with turbos. Nothing wrong with that, but do it with the non M’s.
Look forwards to read more articles from you.
Thank you man.
I had an E39 M5 for a couple of years. It was absolute euphoria.
Through some things that changed in life (kids) I then sold the M5 and got into an E92 335i Coupe DCT and then an E90 335i auto.
I then spent the next 4 years longing for an M again.
I looked hard for a clean E60 but could never find the right one. They’re tough to maintain though (although I do have the skills and was able to maintain my E39 and my previous modified turbo cars before that) and when things go wrong, they end-up being very expensive.
Through some hard work and determination, as well as some luck, my circumstances changed and I was able to get an F10 M5.
I can tell you now, in no uncertain terms, that it is a proper M car through and through.
Drive one and you’ll see.
The thing you have to realise is, modern cars (ALL of them, not just BMWs) improve with every new model. NVH ratings (Noise, Vibrations and Harshness) have to improve, because it’s what the market demands. If you make a car that has more road-noise than the older model, it’s not going to sell, for example.
Comparing an F10 to an E60 or even to an E39 isn’t fair, because it’s so different.
It’s HUGE, sure, but it’s because the F10 had to be more roomy, more refined and more comfortable than the E60. Just as the E60 had to do so against the E39.
Again, it’s all cars. Audi, Merc, VW… they all do this.
So, compare the F10 M5 with it’s competitors. The E63, the RS etc.
Again, in terms of meeting NVH requirements with the base models and making sure the base models (like a 530d) sell, they have to be better than the outgoing model.
So, using the F10 platform, the M5 is already at a weight disadvantage.
But you soon forget about that.
I owned an E39 and drove a few E60s.
The F10 felt “too big” for about 4 hours on the first day I took delivery.
Now? It feels like a racecar (because racecar), just as all the other M5s have. It shrinks around you and the whole package comes together in a way that no other car of this size can.
The S63tu is un-frikkin-believable. It has a fat mountain of torque that never disappears, with the car pulling harder and harder as it climbs the rev range. Then you hit the limiter and bang the DCT into 2nd and you’re left with tyre smoke and rubber all over the road.
It is absolutely an M car, because of the way it makes you FEEL.
The way it delivers power, the way it scares the crap out of you if you turn off DSC and the way that it captures your soul and your emotions where all you want to do is drive it. And when you do, you just cannot help bu misbehave. A lot.
It’s my favourite M5 of the lot. It’s brutally fast, yet its beautiful and has every creature comfort you can ask for. Not to mention it has better fuel economy than the E60 and even the E39.
I adore mine.
