Normal people like roads that are straight, fast and efficient. There’s a big reason why superhighways cut straight through mountains instead of winding up them.
One big reason I think petrolheads like corners is because driving a twisty road fast takes more input and skill than driving a straight road fast. Driving a straight road fast is just controlling wheel spin, keeping the car straight, keeping the throttle pinned and shifting gears. On the other hand, driving a twisty road fast means following a good line, braking zones, controlling understeer and oversteer, controlled corner exits and more. This love of corners is backed up by what enthusiast cars are like to drive. Many enthusiast’s cars prioritize cornering over straight line speed, or they at least make them equal.
Another significant reason car enthusiasts like corners is drifting, technically known as oversteer. With the back end loose, fun times can be had but be careful; with great fun comes great responsibility.
For some people, straights are just the best way to get to the next corner

For me the thrill about taking corners is the risk associated with doing that. I subconsciously imagine worst-case scenarios, wheels falling off, brakes completely failing or something along those lines. If I were going in a straight line, that’s no big issue, because the car’s weight means it will tend to keep going straight, following the road. However, if something were to happen in a turn and the car would suddenly start going straight, that means crashing into oncoming traffic, tree, ditch, wall or anything else. It’s the thrill of taking that risk that really makes me love high cornering speeds the most.
Lateral g-force is awesome. That’s the other reason we love corners!
Give me a twisty road any day. Nothing like going out on a weekend morning while my wife sleeps in and blowing off some steam. No radio…top down, just the sound of the car/exhaust and the wind, rolling through the gears. Call it Abarth Therapy. When my wife is with me..she loves it when I play. Says it’s like riding in her own personal roller coaster. Especially love doing it down in the Ozarks, or in the Rockies where one bad screw up…you’re going off the side of a cliff. Makes it that much more exhilarating.
Thats why we have The ‘Ring
it’s disgusting
Thats why Laguna Seca is my favorite track ever. The corkscrew for example is literally a roller coaster for cars
What about the Bathurst downhill section?
This hardly delved into anything😂
I do love a good twisting, turning road, and I’m fortunate enough to have some near me.
But that said, I just love driving full stop, even if it means doing something as mundane as my morning and evening commute to and from work…
Didn’t work out so well for me
You aren’t alone, slid off the road in the family minivan…
Corners are only places hondaguys can feel even a little g-force.
as a muscle car guy, I admit that turbo civics can be super fast
What about big circles…like nascar…
that countd
