The 911 has a rear engine because it took the VW beetle concept to a new level where the design premise of rear engine placement, in those days, was not yet see as a design flaw. The unpredictable driving behavior of the earlier 911 Turbos emphasized this flaw!

The 911 has a rear engine to get the emmisions out the rear end and blind the drivers behind.

You got it all wrong man, actually it is rear engined so that they can mount the radiator under the car where there is more air vortexes and it can cool the engine better.

Sure, you could talk about weight distribution and mechanical grip and everything, but the truth is that they are only putting the engine in the rear because they always did that. There aren’t really any advantages to gain from that, apart from the endorsement from some brand snobs (which frankly are the people who buy Porsche the most). “It has always been like that so it’s not a true Porsche if the engine isn’t in the back” and bullshit like that.

The current 911 RSR even is mid engined because it’s a much better concept for a sports car, and guess what? The die-hard Porsche fans went mad, claiming that it’s not a real Porsche anymore. Absolute dim-wits, if I was to drive a car that’s almost as quick as the Ford GT on the track, I wouldn’t cry around that it’s heresy to build a car like that.

There’s a massive advantage to gain from that, which is why they were there in the first place - traction, especially when you consider the suspension tech and crossply tyres at the time.
The engine isn’t hung out of the back of my racer for fun. Single seat RWD race cars and mid-engined Lotus’ aren’t rear-weight biased by accident.

I think they keep it rear-engined because that gives it a very different personality from mid-engined cars that some people really love. I appreciate the effort to keep a unique design, the world needs more variety. If all car design was pragmatic, every car would either be FWD (for economy), AWD (for snowy places) or mid-engined (highest performance).

These so-called Porsche “purists” are some of the worst fanboys, second to Tesla fans. Matt Farah has a vintage 911 that he is making a safari build out of, and the comment section is like a fuclng sanctuary of these guys telling him not to do it.

Based on this logic every sporty car should be AWD, with a DSG and bunch of driving aids, because that will make the car fast on a track in the hands of the average joe. Luckily there are some manufacturers who instead make fun cars… Faster is not necessarily more fun, and at the end of the day, driving a fun car is better than driving a fast car that feels boring and “fake”

So the same reason the Corvette has been front engined for so long, because hardcore fans don’t like change. And at the end of the day, all that matters is that their cars roll off the dealer lots.
