This Is Why Runaway Truck Ramps Could Save Your Life
If you ever have the misfortune to experience disastrous brake failure on a fast downhill stretch of road, you better pray that one of these ingenious run-off zones has been installed!
they ascending stops looks really steep, surely the truck would roll up the hill, stop and then roll back down it becuase it has no brakes?
The truck wouldn’t roll back down due to stones. It basically buries the wheels so the truck stops.
Believe it would also get its axles buried making it almost impossible to move under natural power (weight and gravity).
Just let it stall at the top and leave it in gear?
Basicially gravel traps for trucks.
Do the trucks in the US have such bad brakes or are the roads so steep? In Europe we never have this kind of accidents.
The roads are actually quite steep, the gradients can often leave the brakes in a bad shape and faded brakes on a gradient with tons of load in the back means that this ramp can save the lives of everyone one the road.
at leat in Portugal whe have a few ones, only in long and steep descends
Here in the Rockies, these things are everywhere because of all of the steep hills.
I live in Colorado and these are everywhere in the mountains. All of our roads are hilly and can be very steep with all the mountains and valleys, so having these is truly a lifesaver. They ought to install some on the pikes peak highway cause going down, it’s mega steep.
May have catched up by now but earlier americans used old technology in their trucks which may include engine brakes, a modern volvo can have an engine brake in excess of 400Hp which greatly reduce the need for using the brakes when going down hill.
I think its illegal to use engine brakes on some roads in america as well due to noise.

I live here :) I drive on the I-17 almost once a month!
At times like that it’s nice to point out to others that your car warns you about low brake pressure, but also to brag that it’s from the early 90s. xD
We have these on this side off-the-wall pond…. not quite so hi tec…. but they seem to work
They had these all over the place in Germany when I drove through there last year when you drive through the mountains, bloody brilliant idea.
They have them all troughout Europe, Spain - France - Germany - Austria - Italy - swiss… You name it… if they have mountain’s they have these ramps
