These days car manufacturers spend millions trying to persuade us to buy their cars. Whether it's 'celebrities' like Ron Burgundy shoving gum in a Durango's glovebox, or an Audi R8's stunningly exposed V10 screaming through your television, we are bombarded with slick advertising day in, day out.

Seeing this advert for the Winton Motor Carriage offers an insight into the refreshingly honest tactics of early car advertising. The Motor Carriage's USP is that you no longer need a horse, while the running costs are a delightfully cheap 1/2 cent per mile. With a speed ranging 'from 3 to 20mph', that's value for money.

The advert ran in the Scientific American newspaper in August, 1898.
