#carsoundscontest Community Challenge: Make your own Car Sounds!

Following on from the success of the #mysupercar competition, here’s a new competition! This time it’s something completely different, so if you didn’t like the last one, maybe this will be more to your taste…

The challenge

All you have to do is make a car sound using your mouth! Specifically, your goal is to mimic the sound of a real car of your choice. First, find a Youtube video of the car that you want to emulate, then get recording! When you’re done, please upload the sound either to Youtube (choose “Unlisted” so that other people won’t see them, and feel free to delete it after the competition) or to a website where I can easily download the MP3. If I can’t get the file, it won’t be considered. Then in your entry post, link both the video/audio containing your car sound and the video of the car itself. Please also say what time in the video your car sound impression belongs.

The prize

Once all the entries are in, I will select the best ones and dub the human car sounds onto the real car footage! I will then make a video compilation of these sounds (plus some of my own…) for all of you to enjoy. I will upload it to Youtube but as an unlisted video so you’ll only really be able to get to it via CT. This way the video won’t be randomly discovered by your future best friend/employer/partner.

Rules

  • You may enter as many sound clips as you like. Putting them all into a single post would be helpful.
  • You may blow air through other things (soda cans, tubes, woodwind reeds, brass mouthpieces etc), but use your mouth only whenever possible!
  • If sound editing is obvious, your entry will not be considered.
  • No entries will be considered after Midnight GMT on January 19th. This gives you plenty of time to warm up your vocal chords.
  • All entries must be tagged with #carsoundscontest

Advice:

I will judge based on:

  • How well you capture the car’s tone. This means differentiating between a V6, V8 or V10.
  • Any nice sound effects (downshifts, crackles, pops, anti-lag etc) you do.
  • How close to the correct pitch the sound is.

Don’t worry if you can’t do all three - even if you do just one of these things you have a chance at getting into the video. And if you’re completely hopeless, I will also add a few of the funniest entries…

Different people have different strengths. For example, I’m good at making 6-cylinder sounds but struggle with V8s. So choose your cars wisely.

Good luck, and enjoy making everyone else in the house hate you :D!

Not all electric cars are silent. Formula E cars are actually quite noisy - they sound like a combination of whooshing and straight-cut gears.

Sounds nice but not a member of YouTube or something so I can’t. One’s I can do are Aventador, Gallardo, LFA, R35, Supra (may sound like the R34 too), Civic on dyno, and the Nissan Silvia S14.5 (Chevy engine).

You don’t necessarily need Youtube - just upload your sound to somewhere where I can easily download it.
