WOW! This supercharged Mustang GT is a monster waiting to pounce.
Just last week, I was wandering around at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2017 (claimed to be the biggest car show in Malaysia with roughly 170 different exhibitors) taking place in Malaysian Agricultural Exposition Park Serdang, Malaysia. As if a matter of fate, I stumbled upon this orange monster, the S550 Ford Mustang GT armed with a Whipple supercharger kit. It has the same 5.0 litre V8 found in its naturally aspirated counterpart pictured below:
To put it into perspective, the non-supercharged Mustang makes 435 hp. Slap on the Whipple supercharger, the output cranks up to…(drum roll)…727 hp! That’s a colossal 292 hp boost over the latter.
How do the different state of tune contribute to the performance difference of each iteration? The non-supercharged Mustang GT completes the 0-100 kph sprint in 4.3 seconds and tops out at 250 kph. On the other hand, the supercharged Mustang GT only takes 3.7 seconds from 0-100 kph and tops out at 305 kph!
Step inside the supercharged Stang and the most stand out feature that sets it apart over its naturally aspirated brother is the row of A/C vent just above the central infotainment screen. Where the latter sports A/C vent in all three recesses, the former has none of that save for the left most vent.
As you can see in the photo above, the two vents to the right had been replaced by boost gauge, though I am not sure what the ‘N Gauge’ measures!
I had a word with the exhibitor on the type of tires the car rolls on. According to him, all Mustangs are all equipped with run-flat tire. Naturally, this would leave a ‘clean’ spare compartment…or is it? As pictured above, a tire-repair kit lays hidden in the spare compartment. Never before I thought run-flats can be repaired.
The biggest attraction of the event arguably had to be the Super Taxi Ride which gave visitors opportunity to ride as a passenger (yes, it was a test ride, not test drive) in either the Bentley Bentayga SUV or the Ford Mustang GT. A professional driver would take the wheel and drive you around.
I had the privilege to be a lucky passenger of the supercharged Mustang GT. It was surprisingly a comfortable car to sit in. The leather seat felt plush to the touch. As for the test ride experience…well it left a lot to be desired.
The test route was narrow, meandering and traffic-clogged. Obviously, not a suitable place to unleash the full 727 hp grunt, so it wasn’t really an eye-popping ride. Nevertheless, it was an experience to behold given that was the first time I rode in a Mustang. The twisty route gave me a glimpse of the pony car’s composure when driven into the bend. It felt balance. More importantly the pockmarked road didn’t unnerve the car even the slightest (maybe because of the new independent rear suspension?).
So there you have it. What do you think of the supercharged Mustang? Have you ever ridden in it? Or even drive the nuts out of it? If you do, do share your experiences in the comment section. I would love to hear them!
