6 Cars That are Shorter Than a Mercedes Benz 600 Grosser
This is the 1963-1981 Mercedes 600 “Grosser”. The Grosser was Mercedes’ flagship sedan at the time, notable for its 6.3 litre V8 and it’s famous owners, varying from Coco Chanel, The Pope, and The Shah of Iran. Grosser means “Grand” in German, and it sure was grand. It was a whopping 5.45m (215 inches) which is still massive to today’s standards. It was also very wide, at nearly 2m wide. (77 inches) It was also offered as a LWB Pullman model (4 or 6 doors) Available with a 3/4 or 1/2 convertible top. The grosser had many features which you’d see in a modern Limousine such as the S class, 7 series or Lexus LS LWB. For example, it featured a hydraulic suspension system which also powered the windows, trunk, and front and rear power seats. This car was filled with many luxury amenities, such as a minibar with a fridge as the center console, and power rear seats. Now, to the list! (Please note than the measurements are rounded to the nearest hundredth)
W222 S class (LWB Civilian)
The 600 Grosser is 20.4cm (7.8 inches) longer than a LWB S class, and is 5.1 cm (2 inches) wider. If you have seen a LWB model in person before, you can see just how big the Grosser is. These pictures really don’t do justice.
Hummer H1 (Civilian Wagon)
The hummer H1 is only 4.69m (184.5 inches) long, which compared to the Grosser which is 76 cm (30 inches) longer, makes it seem like a RAV4. This is truly madness. HOW DO YOU DRIVE SOMETHING THIS LONG!? The LWB grosser is over a metre (41 inches) longer than the SWB model making it 1.8 METERS LONGER THAN AN H1!
Rolls-Royce Ghost (SWB)
The Rolls-Royce Ghost is by no means small. It is 5.4m (212.6 inches) long, and is just a bit shorter than the Grosser, and just a hair narrower. However, it still takes up quite some space on the road and commands attention.
2018 Toyota Sequoia
The Toyota Sequoia is massive, much like the tree it was named after. These 5.7L behemoths are 5.2m long (205 inches) but still 25 cm shorter (9.9 inches) than the Grand Mercedes.
Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon SWB (All Years)
The Tahoe is Chevrolet’s Second largest SUV, the largest being the Suburban/Yukon XL, which is the LWB Tahoe. These measure in at 5.18m (203.9 Inches) It still is 27 cm shorter (10.9 inches)
Toyota Sienna (All years)
The current Sienna is quite a long car, able to seat up to 8. In fact it is so long that the models with the ottoman chairs in the middle row can fully recline their seat with the front seats at an average position and have two kids in the third row. However, It is still 37cm shorter (14.6 inches)
Honorable Mention: S600 Maybach (current generation)
The large, opulent Maybach is the longest S class available to order at a Mercedes Dealership, and is the same length as the grosser! Some cars that are longer than a Grosser include full cab pickups, Escalade LWB, Rolls-Royce Phantom, and the Ford Expedition LWB/MAX
I always loved the Grosser, and It’s size sure makes anyone who sees it know someone important is being chauffeured in the rear seats. Nowadays, a professionally restored Grosser can fetch up to a million dollars!
What cars do you know of that are shorter or longer than a grosser?
Comments
Blaze Schmidt (Mercedes Boy) Have you heard about this Benz?
Its only the Pullman versions which fetch millions of pounds at auction (and being previously owned by an infamous dictator adds to this), but a decent SWB one can be bought for around £100k
Jay Leno has a SWB model valued at 750000 USD.
I’m glad I was scrolling through this community, I had no idea you already wrote this article!
Nice job!
Thanks!
It was actually inspired by posts like yours about the Viper.
