8 Sweet Cheap Convertibles For The Summer

With the temperatures climbing and the sun coming out for more than just a few hours each day, now is the perfect time to pick up a cheap convertible and have the summer of open air motoring. While convertibles aren’t entirely practical, and nowadays reserved for the luxury market, there are still plenty of cheap ones available that can be picked up as little as £2,000.

Renault Megane Cabriolet

Now, as an American, I’m not going to begin to say anything about European convertibles other than the fact that their roofs can magically disappear, but what I will say is that this Megane definitely seems like a steal at £1,850. This 2.0 VVT packs 136bhp and comes in “Previlege” trim. It’s only got 58,000 miles on the clock, and is currently for sale from Used Cars Warrington.

Saab 9-3 Convertible

The Saab 9-3 is a perfect example of what happens when aeronautical design meets the open road, and this Midnight Blue example is no exception. Equipped with a 2.0 liter, 150bhp engine this SE model is the perfect cruiser for your favorite side road. What’s equally impressive is that even for a car like the 9-3, it’s only got 100,000 miles and is going for £2,000. It can be found at Wokingham Motors Ltd.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

This smiling little guy probably was the first car that you thought of when you saw the headline, and yes, the Miata is a perfect convertible for the summer, this particular example is bound to turn heads with it’s interesting teal paint. With running costs being relatively cheap, this is a car just begging for a summer of fun. This particular example has 112,000 miles on it and can be found at Autowize Auto Sales in Clearwater, Florida.

Volkswagen New Beetle

What would a list of convertibles be without a Beetle? This 2006 model features the 2.5-liter five cylinder engine, which a massive improvement over the 2.0 naturally aspirated four-cylinder. This particular Beetle has done 117,000 miles and can be had for a relatively cheap, $5,500. The black interior may not be the best for those bright sunny days, but it goes without saying that you’ll definitely catch a few envious looks from people as you drive by. This Beetle can be found at Susquehanna Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania.

Chrysler Lebaron GTC

Before the Sebring and Crossfire, there was the Lebaron, a car that was never described as anything other than a personal luxury coupe. This particular ‘92 GTC model can be had for $2,495 and comes with a Mitsubishi V6 and four-speed automatic. While the 141hp engine might be heavy, it definitely makes for a comfortable car to soak up some miles on the highway. While the styling may not be flashy, for the price, it’s a perfect big cruiser. This retro red ride can be found at Savi Motors, in North Villa, Illinois.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

This Olds Cutlass Supreme is bound to turn some heads. Finished in white, with a matching white rag top, this Cutlass was definitely well cared for in it’s 27 years on the planet. It’s digital dashboard reads 58,565 on the odometer, which means this was definitely a second car. It can be found at Salit Auto Sales in Edison, New Jersey for a respectable $6,000.

Pontiac G6 GT

Equipped with 240hp and 240lb-ft, red paint and aluminum wheels, this Pontiac G6 GT is a perfect open-top ride for the summer. With it’s relatively sedate styling, it looks like any other coupe thanks to it’s hard-top roof. Zero to 60 can be done in 7.3 seconds, and while that’s not the quickest, it will definitely win a stoplight drag race. This GT has done 81,000 miles and can be picked up for $7,995 from Landmark Chrysler Jeep Fiat in Springfield, Illinois.

Chevrolet Corvette

There’s a Corvette on this list because of course there is. This 4th generation Corvette comes with a six-speed manual, a digital speedometer, and a massive 5.7-liter small-block V8 with tuned port injection. With 245hp and a massive 340lb-ft of torque, this classic is prepared for boulevard crawling through every beach town and comfortable cruising on any major highway. It can be found at Laurel Kia for a nice $7,988. With only 72,606 on the odometer, there’s plenty of life left in this American classic, and plenty of sunny days left to enjoy.

This is obviously only a few examples of the hundreds of cheap convertibles out there on the used car market. Instead of taking that vacation to St. Somewhere, try picking up one of these cheap sets of wheels, and enjoy that sweet Vitamin D all summer long. Did I miss one your favorite convertibles? The “teal” Miata is infact a Crystal Blue Metallic example, paint code 23C. One of some 4500 produced in North America in the two years it was available (2001-2002).

Simon Wyatt (four arm squad)

The beetle convertible is horrible, I rode in one once, the owner said it broke down 3 times in less than 100k kilometers. Whenever you touch anything you can hear all of the cheap plastic rattling, and during corners you can hear the chassis flex and the ‘leather’ in the seats feel like some horrible vinyl from a communist made car
