The Argument For Using A Normal Daily Driver #blogpost

When I say normal daily driver, I mean something like a Toyota Camry, not a Dodge Viper ACR. Many of you may be thinking “Why would I even think of buying a boring car like a Toyota Camry as a daily driver. Is this guy even a car enthusiast?” Believe it or not, there are possible benefits and legitimate reasons to pick something more “boring” and less unique over that Japanese roadster your in love with.

One: Taking One For The Team

It’s a sad reality that there are millions of car accidents in the United States alone. By driving your precious sports car all of the time, you are increasing the chances it will be smashed into by a drunk driver or a teenager who hasn’t fully realized the risks of texting and driving. It would make sense in that regard to daily drive something you wouldn’t really mind seeing with it’s bumper caved in. There are also the hazards of intense sun which can destroy paint, salty roads that can rust your car away, potholes that can destroy your suspension, and so on and so forth. Maybe garage queens are in garages most of the time for a reason…

Two: More Money For Your Weekend Warrior

This is probably one of the biggest reasons to not use a sports car as a daily driver. By driving something that has cheaper insurance and drinks less gas, you can spend more money on your fun car. That could be with car parts, repairs, gas bills and more. With that in mind, driving a Prius could help you buy that Toyota Supra you’ve been dreaming about for years sooner. Not much more to it than that…

Three: You Can’t Fully Enjoy Most Sports Cars On Your Daily Commute

It is understandable that car enthusiasts want to enjoy their daily commute. However, most sports cars aren’t built to be fully enjoyed on interstate highways and city streets. They’re built to be had fun with on racetracks and twisting mountain roads. Your car may not be boring to drive, it’s just that the roads you’re driving on are boring.

Four: Less Chance Of Traffic Infractions

It can be safely assumed that if you drive a really fast sports car to work, you’ll want to drive fast while doing it. That also means the risk of getting a speeding ticket, which has both legal and financial consequences. A regular daily driver will be usually be less flashy and slower than a sports car, which means you’re less likely everyday to receive a speeding ticket. As a result, you have more money for car parts and you get to keep your driver’s license and out of jail.

Five: You Can Daily Drive A Car That Was Purpose Built For Daily Driving

As cool as your stripped out “because racecar” interior may be, it’s not easy to live with on a daily basis. It would seem silly to use a stock Mercedes C class sedan as a track car, so why use something like a Dodge Viper ACR as a daily driver? Enjoyable driving doesn’t always have to be redline shifting every gear and hitting all the apexs. It can be just cruising, listening to talk radio or music and feeling good.

I would rather daily drive a car with this interior than a car with a "because racecar" interior

Six: Practical Cars Are Fun In Their Own Way

Practically, you can’t do much with a Mazda Miata; it’s a two seat car with a tiny trunk. With a practical car, you can do things you otherwise couldn’t in an unpractical sports car. You can go camping with your 3 friends because your car can seat all of them, the car is high enough off the ground to get to the campsite, and the trunk or bed is big enough to hold all their camping gear. You couldn’t do that in a Miata, now could you?

Seven: Driving Your Fun Car When You Do Is More Special

By saving your fun car for special events and weekend joy rides, it’s more satisfying when you finally start it up and go for a drive. You can get bored of a car quicker if you drive it day in and day out.

I'm sure this would be pretty fun after 5 days of being in an Acura luxury sedan

Makes sense. I’m not sure I agree it’s an either or proposition.

The big one is… a project car is expensive. Maintenance is costlier because it gets run harder, upgrading and tuning gets expensive…

However, a second car needs its own maintenance, insurance, smogging and registration taxes.

If you have the means for both it absolutely makes sense.

Good post, Chad! After having this Wagon and all the little luxuries, I will not daily anything less than it. Ever. Unless I somehow lose my job.

The Accord is probably one of the best daily driver cars there are.

Maybe you could have a Daily that could be fun to drive. Like one that isn’t too racecar or too boring

Do the adam lz route. Build a drift car, then do minor upgrades to your daily. Like exhaust wheels etc
