The VW Golf Mk2 citySTROMer
Forget your E-Golf and Golf GTE, in 1984 VW made 100 completely electric versions of our well known Mk2 Golf. There had been a prototype Mk1 Golf citySTROMer, but this never reached the production stage. The Mk2 citySTROMer was sold for approximately $34.000 at the time.
The citySTROMer had 16 batteries under the cargo area and the rear seats and those produced about 21 HP. The electric range of the car was about 50 KM (31 mi). The top speed of the citySTROMer was about 100 KM/h and the run from 0-50 KM/h took about 13 seconds. To make sure that the range wouldn’t decrease by other devices which used electricity, they used alternative sources. For example, the heater ran on diesel. The dry weight of the citySTROMer is 1510 KG (a basic 50 HP petrol Golf weighs 820 KG) which is quite heavy considering the size of the car.
The production ended in 1985 and they used the knowledge and experience they got from it to make the Mk3 Golf citySTROMer, they made 120 of those and at a constant speed of 50 KM/h it could drive for 90 KM.
