Bank saves man from £10,000 Rolls-Royce scam

This 72-year-old had a close shave when he tried to pick up a Rolls-Royce he bought through an online auction for £10,000. The seller demanded cash. Luckily for him, the bank suspected something was fishy when he withdrew the large sum - the police found out that the car was registered hundreds of miles away from where the seller was based. He ended up buying a different Rolls-Royce from a more reputable seller.

So to take away from this:

  • Avoid buying cars with cash. There’s usually a reason they’re asking for cash - at best they’re trying to dodge taxes and at worst they’re trying to lure you into a dangerous scam.
  • Look for the final details in any advert. If something seems awry, either enquire or avoid. In this case, the buyer was told to meet the seller at a railway station then travel to a “countryside location” to pick up the car. Sounds dodgy, doesn’t it?
