This open-source simulator is built with soft body physics which makes it much different from the other games on this list. The objects in RoR are able to flex and permanently take on a new shape after colliding with another object. Crashes result in more than just surface wounds. The underlying structure of the vehicle is changed in each impact.

RoR was first built as an off-road vehicle simulator, but has evolved to include boats, buses, sports cars, aeroplanes and more. You are able to completely customise your experience by creating terrains, tracks, textures, objects, vegetation and vehicles.

The TrackMania series is over 11 years old, and has stayed true to its roots as an arcade style stunt racer. In the free online version, TrackMania Nations Forever, you can race on the included tracks or create your own with the custom track builder. Finish with the fastest time and most points by hitting booster pads, going through loops, riding the walls, flying over huge jumps and performing dozens of other tricks. TMNF currently has over 13.9 million registered users, and you can download some of its track creations to play for yourself.

The Live for Speed creators say that the game is, ‘a serious racing simulator. No arcade modes, no steering aids - YOU have to do the driving’. It is not as refined as other serious simulators like RaceRoom, but it does offer continual updates from the development team that hopes to eventually take it far beyond its current abilities. The free version comes with only three cars and one track, but the upgrade to the full S2 content with 20 cars and seven tracks is just £24. Keep an eye out for frequent challenges that award money or prizes to the top racers.

Although Auto Club Revolution has not released the full game yet, you can register for a chance to get in on the next Closed Beta session. When the final version is revealed, it will still be free-to-play as a online simulator. There are both fictional tracks and real tracks like Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and Daytona International Speedway. The vehicles vary: you can race a VW Golf, Ford Focus, Dodge Challenger, BMW Z4, Acura NSX, Pagani Huayra and so many more. Players are encouraged to form auto clubs or crews and race together in the massive online community. We can’t wait until the full game goes public.

Here is another free online racer still in the testing stages. World of Speed is currently under development by Slightly Mad Studios (Project CARS, NFS:Shift). Registration for the Beta tests is still open, but the session that was due to begin in late 2014 has been postponed until sometime in the first half of 2015. World of Speed will be an arcade style MMO with incredible graphics and team-based challenges where winning means taking control of your territory.

RaceRoom Racing Experience is an incredibly realistic simulator that outperforms even some of the pricey racing games. If you haven’t seen the newest premium content available, check it out here. It has some of the most dedicated fans and a very involved staff who actively engages in community discussions. Over the last few years, RaceRoom has improved tremendously and deserves a try from all you racing fans. Yes, you have to pay for add ons, but the base game is great as it stands.

NFS World was released in 2010 with mixed reviews, but it still has a large following. The MMO racer is an arcade type that features daily events, treasure hunts, police pursuits and street races. As you drive around on the NFS World map, you will be directed toward events where you can race in Single Player, Multiplayer or Private mode. You can use several different powerups like nitrous and slingshot to help you gain the lead, and you can purchase Amplifiers to temporarily increase the amount of points you get when you win. Critics claim this game is ‘pay-to-win’, but it all depends on the amount of time you are willing to commit to the game.

Racer
Not your most graphically wowing game, but a good place to go for customisation: you can build almost anything and upload it into the game.

Driving Speed 2
You can only choose from four muscle cars on two circuits, but the graphics and handling do it justice for a free game.

rFactor2 demo
The full rFactor2 game is great (and gets quite expensive). This demo version is good for getting a feel of the quality and handling before you decide to fork out the money.

Now it’s time to break out the racing wheel and wait for the downloads….or if you already have them, it’s time to let us know what you think.
