The Porsche 911 RSR's Coca-Cola Livery Hits The Retro Spot
Porsche is on top form with its retro racing liveries. The 911 GT2 RSR-based 935 track special is available with no less than seven classic colour schemes, and we’ve seen the 911 RSR appear in all sorts of vintage favourites such as Pink Pig and Martini.
This latest one, used for the upcoming ‘Petit Le Mans’ Road Atlanta round of the 2019 IMSA season, might just be our favourite. Particularly because the Coca-Cola theme has a local connection.
The Georgia track probably wouldn’t have opened if it wasn’t for funding from Arthur Montgomery, Jr., who back then was the boss of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
The red and white Coca-Cola livery chosen echoes the one used by Bob Akin Motor Racing for seven years on competition-spec Porsches of various shapes and sizes, most famously a 962.
The RSR closely follows the look of that 962, which was raced to victory at the 1986 12 Hours of Sebring. The RSR paying tribute features the Coca-Cola ‘Dynamic Ribbon’ on its bonnet, sides and rear bumper, and the same ‘Coke Is It!’ tag. It’s even wearing white BBS wheels, just like its predecessor.
Speaking about the return of the colours, Nascar and IMSA chairman Jim France said: “Bob Akin was one of a kind, much like Porsche and Coca-Cola, and to see this livery at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for this year’s Motul Petit Le Mans will certainly be exciting for everyone.”
Akin sadly died following a 2002 testing crash at Road Atlanta aged 66. If he was still around today, it’s safe to say he’d dig these two RSRs.
