This Test Driver Just Wrecked A £200,000 BMW i8 Prototype
If you think you've experienced a bad day at the office, spare a thought for this test driver, who's just crashed a BMW i8 hybrid supercar. And not just any i8, this one is (or now was) a prototype.
The crash occurred near Freising, Germany, on the A92 in wet conditions. According to local police, speed was a contributing factor. Witnesses say the BMW crashed into the central reservation, before veering back over to the right-hand lane where it came to a stop. With extensive wheel and suspension damage the £200,000+ prototype will almost certainly be a write-off.
BMW's i8 uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot and an electric motor to develop 357bhp. It'll do 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and top out at 155mph, yet still return a Prius-shaming 113mpg. The production version goes on sale this year at an expected price of £100,000, and comes with the coolest key fob ever.
