Toyota Just Trademarked 'S-FR' And Everyone's Losing Their Minds

Naturally our first thoughts turn to a name for the collaboration between Toyota and BMW, though we're still hoping that will be the new Supra, however there are a number of theories doing the rounds

Ever since Toyota revealed the bonkers FT-1 last year, the internet has been in Sherlock Holmes mode, searching for shreds of evidence that this could be the new Supra we’ve all been longing for. The guys over at the Supra MkV forums might just have uncovered something, in the shape of a trademark filing for the name ‘Toyota S-FR’.

This could be any number of things, however the most intriguing theory is that it’s the new Supra’s name, with Toyota merely referencing the old car through the letter ‘S’ instead of reviving the nameplate. This would make sense, since the new car is in no way an evolution of the old car, particularly given the fact it’s being built in conjunction with BMW.

Other theories being thrown about include this being the name of a sub-GT86 model, however rumours of such a car come from an Australian site and seem fairly speculative. Jalopnik posits a legitimate theory that it could just be to keep other manufacturers from naming a car that sounds similar to FR-S. Or that it could be nothing at all. You’ve got to love a healthy dose of speculation, haven’t you?

Whether this comes to anything or not remains to be seen, but in the meantime we can only hope it’s not the name of the new sports car project. S-FR might just be the least exciting car name since FR-S.
