What causes supercharger whine? I've seen videos of Miatas that are fitted with Jackson Racing superchargers and the whine is louder than the engine, so I wondered what causes it and if it could be made less loud.

A mix of everything, The rotors, gears and depending on what type of blower even the belt can cause a whine.

Okay, so what way would you say could make it quieter?

The real question is why would you want to make the Blower Whine quieter? That’s the entire point. A properly set up turbo system is way more efficient, but they don’t have that sweet sweet gear noise.

Because I prefer to hear the engine over the whine, especially because the whine can get monotonous, a burbling 4-pot can’t.

So do I. And I don’t really like turbo noise that much. Guess that makes me a sinner. ;)

Air being raped is the whine.

either that or the straight cut gears in the supercharger

im pretty sure its just the mechanical bearings and turbines and stuff and maybe the belt

I think its mostly because of the straight cut gears in the supercharger. But i don’t think you can get it much quieter without losing preformance. Or a custom build supercharger
