5 Reasons Why BMW //M Is Better Than Mercedes ///AMG #blogpost
A little while back, I listed down some reasons why AMG was better than BMW’s M division. And readers seemed to like it.
But the one thing everyone kept asking was; “Do why BMW M is better. I wanna see the opposite!”.
And so, with your prayers answered. Without further ado, here’s 5 reasons why M is far more superior than AMG. Even if I do prefer the shouty Mercs…
1. Their Engines Sing, Rather Than Shout
If you know the Bavarians, you’ll almost certainly know that they are famous for their zingy-sounding straight six engines.
Whereas AMG casts their bellowing V8s from the fiery caves of Hell, the M division prefers to compose their engines from a Kraftwerk music concert.
It’s almost as if the S54 straight six from the M3 CSL was designed to suck an exotic cocktail, rather than to set fire to it. Which is what AMG would’ve done.
BMW’s M series engines are amongst the most exquisite sounding, the world has got to offer!
2. They’ve Made Cooler Race Cars
Is this reason subjective? Well, from where I’m sitting, yes.
AMG have made some decently epic race cars over the past 50 years, the ‘Red Pig’ 6.8 300SEL is sexy! And I adore the CLK GTR Le Mans car!
But as a whole, there’s more BMW M series race cars I’d rather own than the AMGs. There’s such a sense of pride with BMW’s racers, the sense that each one is designed to stab Porsche where it hurts.
The 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’ for instance, was their first big hit on the track. Followed by the breathtakingly beautiful M1 pro-car.
They even won Le Mans in 1999 with the V12 LMR, a last hurrah before 21st century changes!
3. Their Affordable Performance Cars Are Much Nicer
As I’ve mentioned before, I do prefer AMG as a whole to M series. It’s a long-life and personal thing, I guess.
But the thing is, in order to get a proper AMG with a big V8 and tonnes of power, you really have to rob a few banks…
I mean, the A45 hatchback costs just over £40k, but it’s not really an AMG in my eyes.
BMW however, can offer the M140i and M240i, which start from just over £30,000. And those are M-tweaked cars, even though they’re not…. bespoke M cars…
But still, for rear wheel drive, straight six powered sports cars. That’s good value!
4. They’re More Innovative
Let’s face it, AMG never really innovated much during their lifetime. All of their greatest models seem to be follow-ups or reactions of cars that came before it.
And it was typically BMW that started rowing the boat, take the M5 for example.
In the late 1970s, the M division stuffed their 3.5 litre straight six from the M1 into the E12 5 series. And the M535i was born! (Then the M5 soon followed after).
It was the only car of it’s time to have this awesome recipe! Yet it took several years for AMG to get their E Class rival…. right.
Even with the M1, it was pretty much the only supercar of the time to be civilised! Something we take for granted today.
5. They Don’t Go Overly Mad
What I mean by this, is that unlike where AMG spanks up nearly every car in the range, and produces pointless tat like the GLS 63. BMW’s M division stays back from widening the M series range.
They don’t go overly mad, they prefer to M-spank only certain cars!
And those cars tend to be those that buyers will want already. Thinking about an X3-M? Dream on, because they don’t make it.
The M3 on the other hand, they do and will always make! M cars have always been wilfully intrinsic and tasteful.
And that’s why you have to love the M division. (Apart from the hideous X5 and X6 Ms).
So There We Are.
Even though I have always preferred Merc’s shouty, tail-happy AMGs. Those are 5 reasons why BMW’s M division is better!
If you have any thoughts, comment them below!
And even though Mercedes has caught my heart with the new E63. I will very much look forward to seeing (and hopefully testing…) the upcoming M5, which will be revealed very soon!

Good article!
I’d be more of a BMW fan than Mercedes, but have to say Mercedes are generally more technologically innovative than BMW with everyday incar luxuries etc. BMW’s although in comparison can often feel basic but stay timeless both on the inside and exterior whereas the Mercedes feel obsolete after a certain period of years.
Now I want to see…. I´ll stop.
BMW FTW

Nice post man! Was hoping you’d make one
You’re welcome =) Any ideas for more you would like us to write?
And what about the Foot Pedal for parking Brake, how can you drift with a pedal as parking brake ? I don’t understand Merc’, why don’t you put a real Handbrake in your cars?
I agree with your points, but the reason I love AMG is that they shout, they are over the top and they are mad.
Been lucky enough to drive an M6 before and also an E63 both from the late 00’s. The Beemer felt more “attached” to the road, a better feel through the steering wheel around bends. They do however feel too serious at times. An AMG puts a smile on your face. The engine sound, the grunt and acceleration. It was insane. I don’t want to get rid of my Alpina anytime soon but if I was I would be looking at either a C63 or funds allowing an E63.
Awesome! How long ago was this? (which generation(s) were the cars?)
Point no. 5 was spot on. AMG lost it when they began tuning random blobmobiles . Recently, they have begun slapping AMG on normal mercs. In the current C class, the 3 litre v6 used to be known as c400 , which became c450 AMG , which is now the c43 AMG. They are diluting the name day by day. I hope the upcoming f1 powered hypercar can solve this.
