The First Maloo: 1990 HSV VG Maloo

In 1990 Holden released the VG ute. The first Holden ute in six years. The ute had been missed and the public was excited to see it back. Not long after, HSV revealed their Maloo (Aboriginal word for thunder) at the Sydney Motor Show.

The Maloo was a rear-wheel drive performance utility. It was manufactured at Holden’s plant in Elizabeth, South Australia as a v8 ute then sent to HSV’s factory at Notting Hill in Victoria. To keep manufacturing simple, HSV just bolted on different panels and engine parts. The Maloo has a nice neat body kit which i might say looks amazing. In the engine bay the Maloo has Holden’s 5l v8 which makes 180kw and 400nm of torque with the HSV cold air intake and dual exhaust.

The Maloo sat on 16 inch alloy wheels and Pirelli tyres. The suspension was also different from the standard ute. The front suspension was adapted from the VN SV5000 (Post will be done on this car) and the rear was a live axle set up with softer coil springs and a limited slip differential as standard. This made the utility handle like a sedan. The Maloo’s payload was reduced to 592kgs.

The Maloo was available in two colours, Alpine White and Maranello Red. It also came with three decal packs.

Only 132 VG Maloo’s were built. Due to this they are quite rare and go for a decent amount, approximately $34,000. If you want to know more let me know and ill try to find it.
