Real Racing 3 - My Tips

I’ve had RR3 for quite a long time (I’m level 70), and have never spent a penny on it. So here are my tips on how to play better! I’m planning to do a full review of the game at some point, and possibly review certain cars as well.

Glide don’t slide

The handling in RR3 favours smooth drivers - you don’t want to be sliding. Braking a few metres earlier on each turn will cost you far less time than sliding.

Get to know your car

The differences between cars’ handling seems exaggerated in RR3, so get to know your car. For examples, cars like the Porsche 918 Spyder Concept and Nissan GT-R R35 tend to feel stable and easy to drive, whereas cars like the Ferrari 458 and Ferrari Enzo heavily penalise you for exceeding the limits of grip. Adapt your style accordingly.

Get to the front

In Cup races, you always start from the back. It’s very important that you get to the front very quickly. Usually the best tactic is to go to the side that the first corner is (so drive on the right for a right turn), brake very late and use the cars turning in as your brake. Speaking of that…

Other cars can help you

Using other cars to slow yourself down can help as a last resort, but try not to do it on every turn. As a bonus, you might make the other car spin out.

Win by an inch, lose by a mile

The AI system constantly adjusts the difficulty of the opponents to your performance. If you’re about to win, slow down and wait right at the finish line, then floor it when it shows that 2nd place is 100-200yd away. For Drag Races you can downshift to slow down. Of course, you don’t want to drop a place while doing this. If you ever find the AIs too hard, go to a Speed Snap event and record really low scores again and again to lower the difficulty.

Two wheels good, four wheels bad

You can go two wheels off-track with no ill-effects, but if you have all four wheels off-track, you’ll slow down dramatically, lose control and make your car require servicing more. Bear in mind that certain tarmac sections (such as the flat section on the inside of the banked track at Indianapolis and Daytona) count as off-track. Use this trick to cut through chicanes!

Drive as if it’s a Pinto

You remember the Ford Pinto? The car that exploded in a fireball if it got hit on the rear bumper? Well, in this game if you get knocked at the side of the rear bumper, chances are you’ll get ejected from the pack and into the tyre barriers. There are usually one or two unlucky cars that suffer this fate in the first 20 seconds. Don’t let it be you. If you’re being tailgated (RR3 AI cars like maintaining BMW-distance), let the other car pass - it’s safer. If a car’s coming up towards you, try to block it - it’ll be forced to brake and lose speed. Then let it past.

Use every bit of your durability

Wear down your durability to a couple of bars by doing smaller events, then do the longest race you can find to make the most of it!

Use the Fame Agent on long races

If you’re doing a big race (I think the cutoff is around 7,000 Fame for most levels, more if you’re 200+), use the Fame Agent. The 1 gold you spend will be more than made up for by allowing you to level up quicker (which gives you gold).

Save your Gold

Later in the game, Gold is incredibly hard to come by. So don’t max-upgrade every car. Usually only the R$ upgrades are needed to finish a series. If however a car has an Exclusive Series, it may be worth maxing it - the gold you get from completing the Exclusive Series may be greater than the gold you spend upgrading (confirmed this is true for the Skyline R34 GT-R and the Gallardo LP560-4, could be the case for others).

Go for 75%

You get rewards for completing 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of a series. But to get 100%, you need to own EVERY car in the series, which is rarely worth it (if you’re late game and short of Gold, probably worth it on the Amateur series). You can usually get 75% on a series even if you only own one of the cars, so aim for that instead.

Don’t bother with Events

In order to win the exclusive car on offer, you’ll need to play multiple times per day and heavily upgrade your car. Not many players can do this. Unless you’re very advanced and super committed, don’t pour any R$ or Gold into those events (still complete a few events - you may get a few gold or discover a farming race).

Farm races

Usually Le Mans Cups tend to be the best contenders for this - these can be up to 10 laps long! But if you find a race with good rewards for the time spent, by all means farm it!

Think ahead

Sometimes you’ll need to buy more than one car to finish a series without spending Gold. For example, the Spirit of Ferrari series uses the 458 Spyder, 599 GTO (costs Gold) and Enzo. I had only unlocked the 458 so used that. But then I realised that I would have to spend quite a lot of Gold to upgrade the 458 enough to reach the end of the series. So I waited until I had lots of money, raced the 458 just enough to unlock the Enzo, bought it (at the 20% Showcase discount) and completed the series Gold-free. Use the Wiki to find out the PR that you need to finish a Series - remember that Cups have a minimum PR requirement.

Use sales

When you first unlock a car’s Showcase, you get a one-time 20% discount on it. So if you’re planning to buy that car, save up enough, then unlock that Showcase. This goes double for Gold-only cars - you’ll want to save every last bit of that Gold!

Airplane mode

If you’re struggling on a race, turn Airplane mode on, force close the app and restart it. This will mean you can only race against bots, which tend to be slower, especially on Endurance events.

Force-close

If you’re losing a race, force-closing the app mid-race will mean your car doesn’t get damaged and any Crew members hired will not be used up. However, it doesn’t save you Drive if you’re doing a time-trial.

Long race? Don’t despair

If you’re doing a long race and sitting in 4th place, unable to progress, don’t give up. Opponent cars seem to be extremely reluctant to lap the back of the pack, so once you catch up with the tail runners, you’ll often find you can pass. This effect tends to happen between lap 5 and lap 8.
