Turbo Flutter or Not?

I’m actually pretty curious if this is a case of turbo flutter or not, though my instincs tells me it is.

My uncle has a 2.5L turbo diesel lifted pickup truck with big fat tires and a straight pipe (yeah I know not cool and very heavy). So here’s the thing when ever he releases the throttle I can hear a fluttering sound, I assume that it is turbo flutter and if it is, it ain’t healthy for the turbo even though it sounds good. What do you guys think?

If it is turbo flutter why is there turbo flutter on a stock engine and should he add a BOV to remove it? Can anyone explain?

I do know that turbo flutter is a compression surge when the driver backs off the throttle but for a factory engine that didn’t have it in the first place why did it suddenly get the fluttery sound from the turbo that many of us love or hate?

Well, look somewhere on your intake tube after the turbo…usually it’s mounted there, id assume if it’s a turbo from the factory that there is one, but ya never know.

Sure it’s not a loose manifold?

Nope it’s not a loose manifold. I checked both the intake and exhaust manifold and both of it was in place and tight.

Those probably have a diverter valve, did you check it for leaks?

Yep I checked it if it had any leaks and nope no leaks. BTW The engine is purely stock and no mods have been made to it.

Maybe the valve is just stuck?

I have a larger than standard turbo on my car (petrol) and even with a bov i still get flutter. Any car ive had with a larger turbo inevitably gets it. No turbo has yet been damaged by it!
