Out With The New, In With The Old: The Benefits Of Putting A Carburetor Onto A Modern Engine #blogpost

It may seem like there is no benefit to putting a carburetor onto a modern engine, but there are actually some good reasons to do so. Here they are…

No Computers Necessary

Granted, carburetors aren’t entirely simple to work on (especially with a Quadrajet) but they don’t require a computer to tune, they use jets and metering rods instead. With that and a few simple hand tools, you’re ready to tune your carburetor to your needs.

Affordability

While carbruetors don’t get as good of gas mileage, the carburetors themselves and the intake manifolds that go with them are cheap compared to fuel injection. This could be a great reason to use carburetors on a modern engine if you’re on a budget.

Choice

Carburetors and intake manifolds come in all shapes and sizes. 2 barrel and 4 barrel, 500 cfm and 1,000 cfm, vaccum or mechanical secondaries and that’s just for carburetors. You also have torquey and short dual plane intakes and tall and high revving tunnel rams. Whatever your application is, there’s a carburetor and intake combo for you

Looks

This reason may be entirely subjective, but it’s still a reason some people put carburetors onto modern engines. They might not like the plastic engine covers of today and prefer the simple looks of a Victor Junior intake and an Edelbrock carburetor on top.

Honestly, swapping out a fuel injection (even if it’s just a really basic single point injection) for a carburettor is a nothing but a straightaway downgrade. The only real disadvantage an EFI has to a carburettor is the fact that it needs computers and half a dozen sensors and bits and pieces to work - which in this case isn’t a disadvantage at all since the car already has all of that set up already.

They’re quite useful when swapping an engine, but I agree with you, EFI is way better than carburetors.

I do love carburettors same as you, but I think it’d be quite pointless to swap fuel injection for carburettor. It only makes the engine worse in pretty much every objective way. I’d much rather buy a car that is carburetted from the get-go and keep it that way if I wanted a carburetted engine

Carbs are cool, but I just don’t see the benefit of swappibg to a carburetor.

Carbs are cool but they’re also literally useless compared to EFI.

useless? They get fuel into the engine about as well as EFI

Computer tuning solves all the problems that come with carbs. No offence, but none of your points have any real grounding. EFI is superior in every way except price.
