Car of the Day - Skyline GTR R33 Tommy Kaira R
The Nissan Skyline GTR is an icon for enthusiasts. Most people look at it and see an antisocial 20 year old Nissan, but a car guy sees a legend.
The GT-R made supercars of its day look silly. It didn’t need to be an inch off the ground, with 6 litres and 12 cylinders of engine. In fact, it got away with half of that. A comfortable 4 seater, reliable 4 wheel drive car with a spacious boot that could also lap the Nurburgring faster than a Lamborghini Diablo. In fact, the R33 GTR was in dispute with the Jaguar XJ220 over the first production car to break an 8 minute lap of the Nurburgring. Australians dubbed it the “monster from Japan” the Godzilla.
The Tommy Kaira R is a limited edition R33 GT-R by the famous Tommy Kaira tuning shop in Japan. There were only 400 of these made, each coming with their own unique plaque. Apparently Only 34 out of 400 have the full Tommy Kaira kit, with most customers choosing certain parts from the list rather than the complete package which makes this particular car very rare. The complete package was around £30k equivalent at the time. This gave you a complete bodykit, rare tommy Kaira 18” rims, Tommy Kaira Interior comprising bucket seats, steering wheel, gear knob, gauge clusters (inc. 10,000 RPM tacho) and in the centre console three gauges in a carbon-fiber surround, detailing boost pressure, oil temperature, torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, and thats just the aesthetic mods. The Tommy Kaira R is a rocket ship, with upgrades over the standard R33 GTR being a new Tommy Kaira ECU, Turbo, intercooler and radiator, intake, clutch, strut braces, full exhaust system and a full Tommy Kaira R Ohlins coilover set tuned for the R33. These mods bring the Tommy Kaira R’s output from around 320bhp in the standard R33 GTR, to over 425bhp, all to a reliable and professional standard. Thats a lot of car.
