New mod! Short shifter for GP

I think that one of the bad points of the GP is the feeling with the gearstick. It’s not very precise, and I sometimes had difficulties to engage the 1st gear. And lately, the gearstick won’t always come back in the central position. So I decided to disassemble the part below (I don’t know how it’s called…), and give it a good clean. Then install a shortshifter for a better feeling!

The lever at the bottom was a bit rusty, and it was difficult to rotate. This is why the gearstick didn’t come back in the central position. I resprayed it, greased it well and fitted it back. Then I installed the shortshifter, very easy to do, only 2 screws to replace! For those who don’t know how it works, there is a knob on it (where you clip the gear cables) which is closer to the rotating point than the original. So you have to travel less far with the gearstick to engage a gear.

Last step is to adjust the cables, as I couldn’t engage all gears. You got to screw or unescrew the clips turn by turn, and test if you can engage all the gears easily.

This is an easy mod that (quite) everybody can do. The shortshifter is a bit expensive for what it is, but I enjoy even more driving my GP :-)

Great write up! I’ll check if they do them for the 500 as the shifting feel is not the best I’ve had.

Thanks :-) The 500 and the GP share many engines and gearboxes, I’m pretty sure you’ll find one.

Good post. I’ve been looking to add one to my Evo but I might get a garage to do the work, I don’t trust myself poking around near the gearbox!
