Top 5 Moustaches in F1 History #blogpost
Top Gear has conducted that driving under influence of a ‘stache can be dangerous, but these five F1 drivers did it nonetheless.
5. Keke Rosberg
Keke Rosberg was a Finnish F1 driver of the 1980s. He became the F1 world champion in 1982 with Williams F1, despite only winning 1 of 16 races and having an DNF in 3 of them.
4. Nigel Mansell
Along with owning the most stereotypically British name, Nigel, he also won the F1 championship in 1992 and the Indycar World Series in 1993, making him the only driver in history to become the incumbent champion of both series at the same time. He is famous for challenging drivers like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, often in very risky maneuvres. Also for having a moustache that looks exactly like his eyebrows.
3. Clay Regazzoni
He was one of the very few Swiss F1 drivers, perhaps the only one, I’m not sure. What’s for sure though is that he was wielding a huge moustache, along with mutton chops and a mullet. This made him fitting in perfectly in the world of the 1970s and 1980s. He had an accident in 1980 in his Ensign-Ford, causing him to become paraplegic. He was still starting in some races nonetheless, including the Rallye Dakar.
2. Graham Hill
With another very British prename in this list, Graham Hill, he may not have the biggest moustache in this list, but certainly one of the most refined. He either was inspired by James Bond villains or some stereotypical Frenchman. He is the only driver to ever achieve the Triple Crown in automotive racing: winning the Monaco GP, the 24 Hours Of Le Mans and the Indy 500. He became F1 champion in 1962 with BRM and again in 1968 with Lotus.
1. Harald Ertl
There is no way I can make this list without making Harald Ertl place No.1, let alone leaving him out. He only started in F1 from 1975 till 1978, not winning a single race, but his moustache looks like a kraken, and that’s enough reason to put him in the list. It’s about beards, not about success after all. He was one of the 4 drivers who saved Niki Lauda’s life on the Nürburgring in 1976.

I think you forgot this guy
No way!
No photomontage?
“got a moustache, got a moustache, got a moustache”.
Oh good, a reassuring moustache.
Nowadays many F1 drivers are so young that they wouldn’t have moustache even if they wanted to
I was waiting for Harald Ertl!
He really is inescapable when you talk about beards in F1.
