Differential options for the BMW 1-series
Unlike a conventional limited slip differential, the Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential relies on gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation, and does not cause any interference with the standard traction and stability control electronics. The Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like a conventional clutched LSD. Rather, the Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks.
Wavetrac LSDs shine where other helical LSDs fail: zero on near-zero conditions (ice, wheel lift, etc.). Some gear differentials rely solely on preload springs to combat loss of drive. The drawback is that you can’t add enough preload to prevent loss of drive without creating tremendous handling and wear problems at the same time. So, to avoid these problems, the preload from ordinary spring packs must be reduced to a level that renders them ineffective at preventing loss of drive. The Wavetrac is the only differential that can automatically add more load internally when it’s required.
3. Drexler
The clutch type Drexler LSD is more aggressive than the more commonly used helical diffs, featuring quick response times, strong locking performance and allowing lockup on both acceleration and deceleration (2 way).
4. Open differential
Since the late 90s, LSDs have been exclusive to M cars. Even high end models like the 550i, 335i an and 130i were equipped with open differentials. They kill the fun of rear wheel drive and should be swapped as soon as possible.

tried it once, wasn’t the biggest fan (even for drifting, a good LSD does a better job)
Gabz, take a look at the ASD system my father’s Mercedes W124 had… a 1992 car… with almost 100HP LESS than the 330 e46, it could go sideways much easier and more controllable!
